Please Note: At times, I tend to repeat things. But, that is because we are so prone to ignoring TRUTH if we just hear IT one time. We tend to pass over IT. Hence, if I repeat, take it to heart and let it penetrate more deeply.

Also, my mother was a stickler for proper grammar and spelling. I endeavor to honor her by complying thereby. I have had to take license, at times, to Capitalize where, normally, capitalizing would not be used because I am trying to either EMPHASIZE, or speak of THE LORD AND HIS TRUTH or to endeavor to gain your undivided attention so as to study very Prayerfully and Carefully what you are reading so as to gain as much as you can from it.

Below, you will find a picture of the Golden Bowl and the 2 Olive Trees as spoken of in Zechariah Chapter 4

Stu dy the Pict ure Pray erful ly and Care fully so that you fully und ersta nd its mea ni ng. It is the KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE PROPHECIES OF THE MOST HOLY SCRIPTURES.

Combining Zechariah 4 and Amos 3:7 and 2Chronicles 20:20 and 2Peter 1: 19-21 and Heb 1:1, 2 and Revelation 12:17 and Revelation 19:10, Hopefully, you will realize what Zechariah’s Golden Bowl Symbolism is Endeavoring to Tell You!!!

Brother Randahl

THE GOLDEN BOWL CONTAINS THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY, WHICH IS THE TESTIMONY OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, through HIS INSPIRED Messengers or Prophets. See Revelation 12:17 and 19:10, and Hebrews 1: 1, 2. IT STARTED way back in Antediluvian times with Brother Enoch and has progressed down through the ages being manifested upon many others. See the following from THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY through Sister White:

Anna the Prophet

The spirit of prophecy was upon this man of God [Simeon], and while Joseph and Mary stood by, wondering at his words, he blessed them, and said unto Mary, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." {DG 75.3}

Anna also, a prophetess, came in and confirmed Simeon's testimony concerning Christ. As Simeon spoke, her face lighted up with the glory of God, and she poured out her heartfelt thanks that she had been permitted to behold Christ the Lord.--DA 55 (1898).{DG 75.4}

God Speaks Through Testimonies.-- We must follow the directions given through the Spirit of prophecy. We must love and obey the truth for this time. This will save us from accepting strong delusions. God has spoken to us through His Word. He has spoken to us through the Testimonies to the church, and through the books that have helped to make plain our present duty and the position that we should now occupy.--Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 298. (1904) {Ev 260.3}

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS IS THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY – Rev.19:10; FLB291.1 Above all other books, the Word of God must be our study, the great textbook, the basis of all education. {FLB 295.2}

The Testimonies are not to belittle the Word of God, but to exalt it and attract minds to it, that the beautiful simplicity of truth may impress all. {FLB 295.3}

The Lord opened more fully to Enoch the plan of salvation, and by the Spirit of Prophecy carried him down through the generations which should live after the Flood, and showed him the great events connected with the second coming of Christ and the end of the world (Jude 14). {LHU 350.3}

But, GOD, BY THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY elevated the mind of Jacob above his natural feelings. In his last hours, angels were all around him, and the power of the grace of God shone upon him. His paternal feelings would have led him to utter, in his dying testimony, only expressions of love and tenderness. But under the influence of inspiration he uttered truth, although painful. {1SP 156.1}

So, we see that THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY began way back in Enoch's time and many others had it including Jacob, Silas, Simeon, Anna, etc, clear down to our time in these last days

THE GOLDEN BOWL OF ZECH 4 REPRESENTS THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY WHICH GETS IT'S OIL, TRUTH, FROM THE 2 OLIVE TREES ON EACH SIDE, WHICH ARE THE OLD AND THE NEW TESTAMENTS. The Tube from each Tree represents the Prophets. The Tubes from the BOWL to the Candlestick are the Ministry and the Candlestick is the Church body as a whole, and the Lamps are the Church Sisterhood. THAT IS THE LORD'S PLAN FOR HOW we RECEIVE HIS INSPIRED TRUTH, ESPECIALLY, WHEN IT HAS TO DO WITH PROPHECY. And, it needs to be known and remembered that THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY began with Enoch, who lived in Antediluvian times, ( before the flood), and continues on down to the present time with THE LIVING SPIRIT OF PROPHECY through THE LORD'S DIVINELY INSPIRED Messengers, or Prophets, Namely, Sister Ellen G. White, and Brother Victor T. Houteff. But, each person must be convinced of that Fact, in their own mind, by their own Personal Prayer, Study and Commitment and Personal VERIFICATION through thier own Personal RELATIONSHIP WITH their SAVIOUR, FOR HE IS THE ONLY AND FINAL AUTHORITY!!

In these last days, those DIVINELY INSPIRED Messengers or Prophetess and Prophet are Sister Ellen G. White, 1827 - 1915, who came on the scene in 1844 in the Eastern United States, right after the Great Disappointment of 1844, and who, also, played a Major Role in the establishment of The Seventh Day Adventist Church, THE LORD'S Remnant Church for these last days. The other DIVINELY INSPIRED Messenger or Prophet to The Seventh Day Adventist Church is Brother Victor T. Houteff 1885 - 1955, who came into his INSPIRED Office in 1929. He was an Seventh Day Adventist SABBATH School Teacher in Los Angeles, California, at that time. However, only Sister White is recognized by The Seventh Day Adventist Church Leadership and most of the laity. Brother Houteff is accepted by individual Seventh Day Adventists, most all of whom are laity scattered around the world who believe his INSPIRED MESSAGE FROM THE LORD, NAMELY, THE SHEPHERD'S ROD.

So now, in order to resolve these differences in the mind of man, each Seventh Day Adventist Christian must Prayerfully and Carefully apply to their lives the following BIBLICAL COUNSEL FROM THE LORD, NAMELY, John 7:17, which is: "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the Doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." And, also, 1 Thessalonians 5:20. 21, which states: 5.20 "Despise not prophesyings." 5.21 "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." Then, Isaiah 2.22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of? In other words, THE HOLY SPIRIT MUST BE our TEACHER. We can listen to others, but we must take Everything TO THE LORD, IN PRAYER FOR FINAL VERIFICATION. And, that requires a Very Close Personal Relationship WITH HIM.

And, Now, HEALTH REFORM enters the scene because IT IS THE RIGHT ARM OF THE THIRD ANGEL'S MESSAGE, and a Vegetarian Diet, ( Vegan Vegetarian is even better, and Raw Vegan Vegetarian would be the Best ). HEALTH REFORM IS MANDATORY for us to Discern TRUTH from Error, to Resist the Manifold Temptations of these last days, ( that assail us many times every day ), to Understand, Believe and Live THE STRONG MEAT TRUTHS, ( Heb 5:14), for these last days, AND, to be enabled BY THE LORD, to go all the way through to HIS SECOND COMING without experiencing death, personally and, thus be Translated. You can read about that in THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY BOOK, COUNSELS ON DIETS AND FOODS, By Sister Ellen G. White. IT IS A MOST POWERFUL BOOK, AND A REAL SEPARATOR for Seventh Day Adventist Christians in these Last Days!!!..

To Recap THE GOLDEN BOWL: The Tubes, The Prophets, therefore, bring THE OIL, THE TRUTH, FROM THE TREES, THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, TO THE BOWL, THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY. From THE BOWL, THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY, THE OIL, THE TRUTH is despensed, by Tubes, The Ministry, to The Candlestick, The Church as a body, and the Lamps, the Church Sisterhood, and by THIS DIVINE PLAN, we receive THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, and that way we don't get all the private interpretations of PROPHECY from man, but only from HIS DIVINELY INSPIRED Prophets or Messengers. The Key is for us, individually, to do our part, IN HIM, which is to Pray and Study and Commit, to discern The True Prophets or Messengers, from the false prophets or messengers, of which false ones, there are untold 1000's.

Notice the following HOLY SCRIPTURES:

Luke 24.25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

2 Chronicles 20.20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

Amos 3.7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

2 Peter 1.19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

2 Peter 1.20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2 Peter 1.21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Zechariah 4.1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,

Zechariah 4.2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:

Zechariah 4.3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

Zechariah 4.4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?

Zechariah 4.5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.

Zechariah 4.6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Zechariah 4.7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

Zechariah 4.8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Zechariah 4.9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

Zechariah 4.10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

Zechariah 4.11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?

Zechariah 4.12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?

Zechariah 4.13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.

Zechariah 4.14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.

Remember, you must Pray and Study and Commit TO THE LORD and be certain, in your own mind and heart as to WHAT IS TRUTH, and What is Not!!! THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THROUGH HIS MOST HOLY SPIRIT, MUST BE THE FINAL AND ONLY AUTHORITY THAT CONVINCES you , accordingly.

I Must, also, Remind you that THE FOLLOWING DETAILED AND DIVINELY INSPIRED EXPLANATION OF THE GOLDEN BOWL OF ZECH 4, IS FROM THE SHEPHERD'S ROD MESSAGE by Brother V.T. Houteff, Vol. 2, Pages 283-289. And, as I said, earlier, THIS MESSAGE has been Fully Rejected by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. But, you must remember that they also Rejected THE 1888 MESSAGE by Elders A.T. Jones and E.J. Waggoner WHICH WAS THE MESSAGE TO PREPARE The Seventh Day Adventist Church for THE LATTER RAIN AND THE LOUD CRY, AND WHICH MESSAGE, Sister Ellen G. White, called "A MOST PRECIOUS MESSAGE FROM THE LORD" See TM 91-93.

Now, I will say, that, here and there, in some SDA Churches, THE 1888 MESSAGE is spoken of, but it has been my personal experience, in 38 years in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, that that is a fairly rare occurrence. The 1888 MESSAGE Study Committee, made up of Ministers and Laity, alike, continually try and get THE 1888 MESSAGE back into the SDA Church, but they still meet with considerable opposition in the process. Hopefully, conditions will improve and THE 1888 MESSAGE WILL RECEIVE ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE IN Seventh Day Adventist Church DOCTRINE.

I would ask the same for THE SHEPHERD'S ROD MESSAGE, but, I sense that is asking for A REAL MIRACLE OF THE LORD! Time will tell, but, I honestly think that because the Seventh Day Adventist Church has Rejected THIS MESSAGE, AND BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A HEAVY AND DECIDING MESSAGE OF LOUD CRY TRUTH for these last days, that The Seventh Day Adventist Church, as a Corporate Body, will NEVER accept IT. It does not mean they could not, it simply means, that they will choose not to. I pray that I am wrong! However, Individual Church Leaders and Laity still have the opportunity to do so, Hopefully, as more and more Seventh Day Adventists Pray and Study and Commit for themselves, then, at least, a goodly portion of them will Finally Realize THE WONDERFUL STRONG MEAT TRUTHS IN THE SHEPHERD'S ROD MESSSAGE and they will, also, take their stand with the rest of us who have made that Joyful Transition. In the mean time, with that in mind, I say, again, we need to Pray and Study THIS MESSAGE ON ZECHARIAH 4 AND THE MESSAGE AS A WHOLE, and, then, decide for ourselves instead of letting others make our decision for us, be they Ministers or laity. There is a sobering statement in THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY THAT STATES THE FOLLOWING AND CAN, IN ONE WAY, CONSTITUTE A SOLEMN WARNING, NAMELY, "Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord." 'The church will rarely take a higher stand than is taken by her ministers. We need a converted ministry and a converted people. Shepherds who watch for souls as they that must give account will lead the flock on in paths of peace and holiness. Their success in this work will be in proportion to their own growth in grace and knowledge of the truth.'

THE LORD JESUS MUST BECOME our FINAL AUTHORITY REGARDING WHAT IS TRUTH and What is Not!!! If we do not follow HIS COUNSEL, we will be left without excuse!!

Zechariah 4

The anti-typical symbols of the second temple (the type), were shown to Zechariah in vision and recorded in the fourth chapter of his prophecy as follows:

"And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep. And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts.... And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth." (Zech. 4:1-6, 12-14.)

Thus the word of God is represented by these symbols. Therefore, the interpretation of them is to reveal the manner of communicating the Word of God to Zerubbabel. Not to the Zerubbabel that was engaged in building the typical temple, for he was orally instructed by the prophets Zechariah and Haggai. Therefore, as the significance of these prophetic symbols were not understood by them, they must be applicable to those who are to be engaged in building the antitypical, or spiritual temple (church), as it was previously explained.

Each one of these symbols must be separately deciphered by uncontradictory evidence, and their significance must constitute the method by which God is to communicate His Word to His servants. It has been previously stated that all the books of the Bible meet, and end in the book of Revelation. Therefore, the revelation of Zechariah's prophecy must be found there also.

We quote: "The seven stars are the angels of the seven

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 283

churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches." (Rev. 1:20.) It will be noticed that the messages to the seven churches are not addressed to the candlesticks (the church as a body), but to the angels, saying, "And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write." (Rev. 3:14.) This angel is not a heavenly angel, for he is at fault -- under condemnation and about to be spued out, except he repent. It is this angel who has charge of the candlestick (church). Therefore, the seven angels denote the leadership of the seven churches, and the candlesticks are the symbols of the seven churches. Thus, the churches in this instance are symbolized by candlesticks. Therefore, the candlestick in Zechariah's vision denotes the church as a body.

The revelation of the olive trees is found in the eleventh chapter and the fourth verse: "These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth." The olive trees and the two candlesticks are the two witnesses. (See Rev. 11:3.) Zechariah also states that "These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth." (Zech. 4:14.) Therefore, these two olive trees, and two candlesticks are inseparable, for they both "stand by the Lord of the whole earth." The two candlesticks in this instance represent God's church in two sections, and each one has an olive tree. The angel interpreted them to Zechariah as the Word of God to Zerubbabel. Therefore, the two candlesticks represent the Old and New Testament churches (Jewish and Christian). And the two olive trees are symbols of the Old and New Testament Bible (the Word of God to Zerubbabel). These two witnesses "shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and three score days (from 538 A.D. to 1798 A.D.) clothed in sackcloth." (Rev. 11:3.) "The two Witnesses represent the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament." -- "The Great Controversy," p. 267.

Thus we have a candlestick for each of the two sections of God's church while the Scriptures were being written. One candlestick and one olive tree to the Jewish, and one candlestick and one olive tree for the apostle's, and seven for the remaining history of the church to the time of the separation of the tares from the wheat, or to the commencement of the harvest. Thus the candlestick (church) in Zechariah's vision is the tenth, denoting a universal church; depicting the living church that shall unite with all the saints since the world began -- which will join with the church of the entire universe of God! This candlestick in Zechariah's vision is a glorious one, which in comparison, all others stand as "nothing" -- in perfect harmony with the second temple, which in comparison the first stood as "nothing."

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 284

The Two Golden Pipes

True then, the candlestick represents the church, and the two olive trees the Old and New Testament Scriptures. Now, "What be these two golden pipes," which "empty the golden oil out of themselves?" We quote from "Testimonies for the Church," Vol. 7, p. 249: "The inner lamp must be supplied with the oil that flows from the messengers of heaven through the golden tubes into the golden bowl. The Lord's communication never comes to man in vain." Therefore, the two golden pipes that empty the golden oil into the golden bowl are God's messengers of inspiration through whom present truth is revealed, and the only true interpreters of the Scriptures. The oil represents the revealed Word of God from the Bible as it is explained through His appointed servants, and the bowl describes the publications into which these revelations are compiled. This is the "Testimony of Jesus" -- "the Spirit of Prophecy." (Rev. 12:17; 19:10.) The revelation which John received is called "The Testimony of Jesus." (See Rev. 1:9.) Therefore, the testimony of Jesus is also the Spirit of Prophecy, because his testimony is revealed only by the Holy Spirit through a human channel. Thus the Scripture interpreted by Inspiration, is the only testimony that can be, "the testimony of Jesus" -- truth without error.

The Seven Lamps

If the candlestick represents the church as a body, then the seven lamps thereon must denote the sisterhood of churches scattered throughout the denomination. The Biblical number of completeness takes in the entire movement as a whole. This fact is also proven by the following quotation: "When the anointed ones empty themselves through the golden pipes, the oil flows out of themselves into the golden bowl, to flow into the lamps, the churches." -- "Testimonies to Ministers," p. 337.

The Seven Golden Tubes

If the "golden bowl" is that which contains the inspired interpretation of the Scriptures or the writings of the Spirit of Prophecy, and the lamps or churches are supplied with oil from the bowl through the seven golden tubes, then the ministry is represented by the tubes, whose duty is to feed the entire church with the inspired Word of God only. This fact also is proven by the "Spirit of Prophecy," as we read: "The golden oil represents the Holy Spirit. With this oil God's ministers are to be constantly supplied, that they, in turn, may impart it to the church." -- Id.,

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 285

p. 188. Note, the seven tubes (Ministry) draw the oil from the golden bowl, not direct from the olive trees (Scriptures).

This divinely illustrated lesson is too plain to be misunderstood, or its meaning misconstrued. The only safe way by which God's servants and His church can be free from error, full of faith without guile in their mouth (all speak the same thing), is the never erring guide -- "The Spirit of Prophecy." The acceptance of so-called truth, without inspiration, is the devil's trap of deception, and they who advocate such fallacious teachings are the hardest and most impossible ones to rescue from Satan's bottomless pit; for he makes them believe that confession of their errors would disqualify them for teachers, and dishonor their high standing.

He who denies inspired interpretation of the Scriptures is denying the office of the Holy Spirit, and is sinning against Him -- committing the unpardonable sin!

This golden candlestick is the most remarkable symbol in the Bible pertaining to the church of God. Its arrangement with complete number of lamps, bowl, tubes, and pipes, all of gold, with its two olive trees emptying themselves of the golden oil in the golden bowl, reveals that the last section of God's church, is to be the most glorious church in all ages. This "continued communication" by the Holy Spirit to the church, represented by the olive branches emptying the "Golden Oil out of themselves" into one Golden Bowl, and its complete set of Supply Tubes from the bowl to all its lamps, is to bring every part of the entire body in perfect harmony; a church without guile.

This prophetic symbol unmistakably points forward to a heavenly agency absorbing human weakness and imperfection into everlasting glory. "A glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." (Eph. 5:27.) A church that keeps "the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." "Clad in the armor of Christ's righteousness, the church is to enter upon her final conflict. 'Fair as the moon clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners,' she is to go forth into all the world, conquering and to conquer." -- "Prophets and Kings," p. 725. (Song of Sol. 6:10.) To this "candlestick" is the promise: "Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. (Isa. 41:15.)

The "one stone" -- the church -- shall have complete vision of heavenly glory: "For behold the stone that I have laid before

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 286

Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree." (Zech. 3:9, 10.) To the servants of God (the church) is granted to possess the earth, and restore the land to the saints to whom it originally belonged. Thus, "They shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it." (Micah 4:4.)

"And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the Lord is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded." (Zech. 10:5.) "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord of hosts." (Zech. 4:6.)

"And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.... In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them." (Zech. 12:3, 8.) "And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God." (Zech. 13:8, 9.)

"Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God." (Psa. 87:3.) "Cry out and shout, thou inhabitants of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee." (Isa. 12:6.) "Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. (Zech. 2:10.)

What Is Inspired And What Is Not?

Cunning men under the power of the great deceiver, with good words and fair speeches have sought to overthrow the faith of the saints in the word of God by almost innumerable interpretations of the Scriptures, and multiplicity of sects; making it nearly impossible for one to find his way out through the confusion, and thus keeping him in ignorance of the truth. God, knowing beforehand of these cunning devices, has prophetically illustrated the truth by this candlestick in its assemblage of

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 287

parts, symbolically showing that the truth of the Bible is revealed by Inspiration only. Written words can be misconstrued, but symbols can not. Thus making it possible for both learned, and unlearned, to immediately distinguish the difference between truth and error.

The question may arise with some, How can I determine what is inspired, and what is not? The prophetic word of God is capable of answering the question and clearing the confusion, dividing the one from the other as wheat is separated from the chaff. First, "to the law and the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them" (uninspired). (Isa. 8:20.) Second, the churches who were in existence prior to 1844, fell with the proclamation of the second angel's message (Rev. 14:8), showing that God would no longer reveal Himself through that channel. Therefore, every theory, and offshoot or sect that has sprung from the denominations in existence at that time, is false with no light in them. This is also proven by the fact that nearly all the authors or founders of these theories and movements make no claim of inspiration.

The prophecy of Ezekiel, chapter four (explained in "The Shepherd's Rod," Vol, 1, pp. 115-133), proves that Luther, Knox, Wesley, Campbell, Miller, and E.G. White were divinely called. It is also proven by the parable of Matthew 20 that Luther, Knox, Wesley, and Campbell were not given light on prophetic truth, but were inspired to call for reformation on certain truths which were revealed before their time, and had been "trodden underfoot." It is further proven by the same parable that through Miller and White, prophetic truths were revealed which had never before been taught. (See pages 227, 228). It is also shown by Ezekiel's prophecy that light and truth on the Scriptures would continue for 390 years, that is, from 1500 A.D. to l890 A.D.; and then it was to cease for forty years. (See "The Shepherd's Rod," Vol. 1, pp. 114-133.)

Thus, while the 1844 movement proclaimed that light had ceased to be revealed through all other sects, it is shown by Ezekiel's prophecy that light was to continue with the latter, up to the year 1890. This fact also is self-evident, for the Seventh-day Adventist denomination has had no additional light on the Scriptures in the stated forty years. Therefore, any theory, or so-called truth, that might have been advanced by some within this (S.D.A.) denomination that had not been revealed prior to 1890, is also false; though some things were written in the Spirit of Prophecy, they were not to be understood until 1929. The truths revealed prior to 1844, and up to

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 288

1929, are found in the writings of the "Spirit of Prophecy," and that which is not written there, is of no value. Not until our minds have been cleared from all these false theories can we comprehend the truth. In other words the Laodiceans must confess that the charge against them is true -- "wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked;" and by acceptance of the truth they would anoint their eyes "with eyesalve;" for it is the "true witness speaking, and his Word must be correct." Find your explanations "in the Bowl," and you will have no trouble in knowing the truth, or of avoiding the ever ready trap of deception. Thus the difficulty in knowing the difference between truth and error is eliminated.

Shepherd's Rod book, Vol. 2 289

I shall read from The Mount of Blessing, page 166, beginning with the first paragraph. This reading is based on the scripture, "Forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us."

M.B. p. 166 -- "Jesus teaches that we can receive forgiveness from God only as we forgive others. It is the love of God that draws us unto Him, and that love cannot touch our hearts without creating love for our brethren.

"After completing the Lord's prayer, Jesus added: 'If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. He who is unforgiving, cuts off the very channel through which alone he can receive mercy from God. We should not think that unless those who have injured us confess the wrong, we are justified in withholding from them our forgiveness. It is their part, no doubt, to humble their hearts by repentance and confession; but we are to have a spirit of compassion toward those who have trespassed against us, whether or not they confess their faults. However sorely they may have wounded us, we are not to cherish our grievances, and sympathize with ourselves over our injuries; but as we hope to be pardoned for our offenses against God, we are to pardon all who have done evil to us."

Now, what should be the burden of our prayer this afternoon? -- That we might have love for our brethren; that we forgive the faults of others whether or not they forgive our faults, that we confess our sins, regardless what others might do.

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 11

Let me introduce my subject by telling you a simple story.

Once upon a time six brothers were building a bridge, supposedly to the god of Justice. The purpose of the bridge was to unite the east with the west.

They had no difficulty laying the foundations and setting the pillars. But, lo, when they came to join the east wing with the west one, they found themselves confronted with a phenomenal obstacle: What they had built up during the day was torn down during the night. This miracle continued day after day. Finally the brothers sat down in a council meeting to discuss how they might solve their harrassing problem. Feeling that to quit would be the greatest folly they could ever commit, that it would bring their names into disrepute, they studied and they prayed.

At long last they concluded that the god of Justice was for some reason displeased with them and that a human sacrifice would appease him. So it was that they resolved to sacrifice the best one of their wives. This however, was not to be divulged to the women. In order to make an impartial and acceptable selection, they further resolved that on the morrow each would instruct his wife to prepare the best possible

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 12

breakfast and dinner, and to take the meals to him at the bridge as early as possible. They were to explain to their wives that they must needs eat and pray at the bridgeside to the glory of the god of Justice, and for the success of their project. The woman to arrive with the meals first was to be the victim.

Five of the men, though, did not stick to their solemn oath. Each of them straightway told their wives what was to be done, and that therefore they should not hurry to the bridge with the meals.

In the morning, at the appointed time, the men were at the bridge site. Shortly afterwards they saw in the distance someone coming to the bridge. For a few moments no one knew for sure who it was, but soon the man who had kept his part of the agreement recognized it to be his wife. He, of course, immediately burst into tears, and with groans he fell to the ground. Seeing her husband's strange behaviour, the wife dropped her basket of food and ran to the scene to learn what was the trouble. But while she was attempting to comfort her husband, the other five brothers seized her, carried her to a gap in the bridge, and there they cemented her alive. Now, the brothers confidently expected the bridge to stay up, for they felt that they had done all they could to appease the god of Justice.

Thus it was that while the five dishonest men that night returned home in happiness, the honest one returned to his home in grief.

On the following morning, all the men hurried to the bridge, expecting to find it standing intact. But to their surprise and consternation they found the whole bridge lying flat on the ground!

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 13

Naturally, the incident was rumored throughout the city, and the judges of that city went to see what the great excitement was about. As they listened to the builders argue and philosophize from cause to effect, they learned that the unfortunate woman was not sacrificed by fair chance, but by fraud! Thus they judged that the whole disaster was due to the fact that unjust men were trying to build a bridge in the honor of a just god! The matter was brought to court and the judges finally decreed that Justice must be satisfied, else not only the bridge, but even their city might fall to the ground. Accordingly, on that very day the five unjust men were executed, and the honest one was made mayor of the city.

Christians have been building a bridge, so to speak, to the God of Justice for many years. But they do not seem to be any more successful than were the six bridge-builders. And for what reason? -- For the very same reason the six builders were unsuccessful: Selfish men are engaged in the work, and though they see the need for a sacrifice, yet they somehow always manage to make others do the sacrificing.

And you remember that though the building of the tower of Babel was counter to God's will and His order, still all the while the builders worked harmoniously among themselves, their project prospered -- their tower skyrocketed. But when their language was confused and they could no longer understand one another, then the progress of the tower stopped. And to show them that He was displeased with their project and that He was the One Who had confounded their language, God blasted the tower so that it crumbled to the ground. That which happened to the bridge happened also to the tower.

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 14

Christians are working at cross-purposes among themselves. One Christian brother is betraying another. Christian ministers, rather than preaching the Truth, are preaching against one another. One goes ahead to build up, and another trails behind to tear down. They do not see eye to eye; nor do they understand one another even as much as did the confused tower-builders.

Just so long as such selfishness and dishonesty, confusion and animosity, exist among Christians, their bridge and their tower, so to speak, will come to naught as certainly as did the bridge of the six covenant-breakers and as did the tower of the prophet Noah's mockers. There is no way of stopping ism trouble without removing the cause -- no, no more than a splinter wound can heal before the splinter has been removed.

You are familiar with the fact that there was no ism trouble in Moses' day as long as Moses alone interpreted the Word of God to the people. But just as soon as Korah, Dathan, Abiram and others aspired to Moses' office ism trouble started. And the only remedy that even God Himself could find was to cause the earth to open her mouth and to swallow the ism-breathing multitude, the self-appointed representatives of God.

In our day there is an even greater flood of private interpreters of the Scriptures (the cause of today's isms) than there was in Moses' day. And according to Revelation 12:15, 16, the Lord warns that He will again use a remedy similar to the ancient remedy against today's ism-breeding flood. Then some may learn to respect the office of the Spirit of Prophecy. Let us now read of the fate of

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 15

those who chose to continue walking in sparks of their own kindling.

Rev. 12:16 -- "...and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth."

Here we see that a similar remedy which caused isms to cease in Moses' day, is again to be used to cause isms to cease in our day, the only means by which harmony can be restored among fellow-members in the church itself, as well as among Christians in general.

2 Tim. 3:16, 17 -- "All scripture is given by Inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

2 Pet. 1:20, 21 -- "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

Affirmatively stated, all Scripture, not merely a part of It, is inspired. Negatively stated, none of It is privately interpreted, for the reason that It did not come of men but of God; that is, as the Spirit of God dictated to men the Scriptures, so the Spirit of God must interpret the Scriptures to men, that no man privately (without Inspiration) is capable of disclosing the sealed prophecies or interpreting any part of them or even capable of understanding their importance after they are interpreted except it be by the gift of the Spirit of Truth "None of the wicked," therefore,

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 16

"shall understand; but the wise shall understand." Dan. 12:10.

We should now be convinced that as long as this Divine command and principle of interpreting God's Word is overlooked and abused, and as long as selfishness and bigotry exist among Christians in general and among Bible students in particular, isms will continue to increase, and the strength of the people will continue to be wasted just as was the strength of both the builders of the bridge and the builders of the tower. Yes, just as certainly as night follows day, just that certain will their efforts come to naught, and their shame be uncovered.

That we cannot be led into all Truth without the gift of the Spirit of Prophecy, Inspiration symbolically forewarns through the prophet Zechariah. Let us turn to Zechariah 4, and begin with the first verse.

Zech. 4:1-4 -- "And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, and said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and has seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: and two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my Lord?"

The illustration here exhibited, you note, is an exact reproduction of Zechariah's symbolism. In order that our study be simplified and vivid, we shall study the chapter along with the illustration.

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 17

Please see THE GOLDEN BOWL PICTURE, toward the beginning of this section for review of the Symbolism in Pictoral Form.

Now let us hear the angel's explanation of this symbolism.

Zech. 4:5, 6 -- "Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my Lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the Word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts."

The angel disclosed two things: First he made known that the symbolism is concerning the Word of the Lord (the Bible) to the servants of God; second, that His Word is revealed, not by man's might nor by power, but by the Spirit of God.

Plainly this symbolism as a whole represents the system by which the Lord transmits His revealed Word to His people. That we might have a thorough understanding of this Divinely designed system, we need to know what each component part of the illustration stands for. The Spirit of Prophecy gives the clue.

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 18

In The Great Controversy, page 267 is explained that the "olive trees" represent the "Old and New Testaments;" Testimonies to Ministers, page 188, says that the golden oil represents the Holy Spirit; and on page 337 of the same book, along with Revelation 1:20, says that the seven lamps represent the church, and that the seven tubes (the ministry) convey the oil to the churches.

Now study the illustration itself as you would study any cartoon. First of all, the trees represent the Word of God (the Bible -- both Old and New Testaments -- two trees).

Here is seen that the whole symbolical set up is for the purpose of depicting the accomplishment of but one thing -- of keeping the seven lamps (the entire church membership) supplied with spiritual oil (Bible Truth) so that it might give spiritual light all round about, that the church might lighten the world with the revealed Word of God. And since the ministry's duty is to feed the church with spiritual food, the fact is that the seven tubes represent the ministry at work, taking the oil (revealed Truth) from the bowl to the seven lamps, the churches. Now the truth that in the illustration the tubes (the ministers) do not take the oil directly from the olive trees (the Bible), it positively indicates that the bowl in which the oil is deposited represents the container or the store in which the compilations of Inspired Bible interpretations are stored, and that from it, not from the olive trees, the ministers help themselves with oil and carry it to the seven lamps (to the church).

The two golden pipes, therefore, can be only a representation of the inspired channels which are capable to extract the oil (light of Truth) from the

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 19

trees (from both Testaments) and store it in the bowl (books) for the tubes (ministers) to convey it to the candlestick (to the churches).

The symbolism, therefore, points out the system which Heaven has ordained for dispensing the Word of the Lord to His church: that the Spirit of Prophecy at work is the only remedy against isms in the church and in the world.

Those who do not avail themselves of the golden oil, and those who continue ever to hunt for some kind of oil, or whoever try to extract their own, will, of course, drop into the pit when the earth opens her mouth to swallow up the flood. Then it is that ism-breathers and ism-seekers shall forever pass away.

Zech. 4:8, 9 -- "Moreover the Word of the Lord came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you."

These scriptures positively imply that there are doubts in the minds of some as to whether antitypical Zerubbabel, or some other shall finish the work which Zerubbabel has started. Whom does Zerubbabel represent? --

The Word of God explains that ancient Zerubbabel is a signet, type, at the time God overthrows the thrones of the kingdoms, at the time their armies are destroyed by one "brother" Christian's sword cutting down another brother Christian. (Haggai 2:22, 23). Zerubbabel, therefore, represents God's servant at a time the crowned kings, "throne of kingdoms," are overthrown, and in which time one Christian nation

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 20

is at war with another Christian nation. Since the crowned kingdoms are fast passing away, and other forms of governments are taking their places, all proves that antitypical Zerubbabel's appearance is now due. And the Lord's own answer is "the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it."

Zech. 4:10 -- "For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth."

The day this scripture is fulfilled, is the day in which the Lord of hosts starts a reformatory work in an apparently very small and insignificant way, and those who despise small and insignificant beginnings will at last rejoice and shall see that antitypical Zerubbabel is the one to direct the work along with all (seven) his helpers. They are the eyes of the Lord. What a momentous day! What a great people! Evidently they constitute the "stone" of Zechariah Three which we studied several weeks ago, and learned that it has seven eyes, complete spiritual vision. Obviously this is the stone that smites the great image of Dan. 2:45.

Zech. 4:11, 12 -- "Then answered I, and said unto Him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto Him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?"

All these taking place at this particular time, and the prophecies now unfolded, prove that antitypical Zerubbabel must now be here, and that as he has

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 21

started the work, he also must finish it. The fact that Inspiration takes the pains to tell who is to finish the work in itself is proof that there must be active usurpers of his office as there were of Moses' office.

Zech. 4:13, 14 -- "And He answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my Lord. Then said He, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth."

From the angel's information it is now clearly seen that the symbolism depicts the system of interpreting the written Word of God, and of transmitting It to the church. The time of which is in the New Testament era, when both trees are in existence.

Let us now summarize the lesson by the aid of the illustration. Here we see a candlestick (a church) all of gold, the finest of all candlesticks (no "tares" in it). It constitutes the remnant (those that are left after the sinners are done away with) which indeed keep the commandments of God, and have the Testimony of Jesus Christ, the Spirit of Prophecy (Rev. 12:17; 19:10). This fine candlestick is fully trimmed and burning. The two golden pipes (God's inspired interpreters) store the golden oil in the golden bowl (Spirit of Prophecy publications). And the seven tubes (the entire ministry) convey from the golden bowl the golden oil to the seven golden lamps (to the entire laity).

Under this perfect system of preparing, and dispensing the Word of God, "meat in due season," to His people, there need be no fear that the reservoir will run dry, or that the lamps will grow dim. This is the only system, moreover, that can make the church perfect, without spot, wrinkle, or any such thing -- a people without guile in their mouths, all seeing eye to eye,

Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 14 22

all saying the same thing. Truly "a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like." Joel 2:2. This beyond doubt is the mighty power that lightens the earth, it is the Loud Cry. Indeed this symbolism reveals the church at the time she is endowed with the Spirit of Prophecy and with the righteousness of Christ.

Obviously, the system of Bible interpretation, described by Zechariah, is the Lord's only system. It is the only remedy for isms and discord among Christians. Thus it is that His "watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion." Isa. 52:8.
