(This study was given by V.T. Houteff April 3, 1943 and June 15, 1945.)

Our study for this afternoon is based on texts that are somewhat scattered throughout the Bible.  It is in reality a review of the studies we have had the last several weeks, or you might say that it is the conclusion of them.

You remember through our study of the eleventh chapter of Daniel and Isaiah chapters seven and eight and onward, they bring to view a war and the deliverance of God's people in a time of great distress.  That is a point that I am to emphasize this afternoon.  We will read first

Zech. 1:18, 19 -- "Then lifted I up mine eyes and saw, and behold four horns.  And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these?  And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem."

The prophet saw four horns, and the angel that talked with him made him to understand that these horns were symbolical of the  Gentile nations which had scattered Judah (the two-tribe

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       3

kingdom), and Israel (the ten-tribe kingdom), and also Jerusalem (the capital city of the two-tribe kingdom -- Judah).  In other words, in the symbol of the four horns, Zechariah saw those Gentile nations which scattered God's people and destroyed their kingdom.

Zech. 1:20, 21 -- "And the Lord shewed me four carpenters.  Then said I, What come these to do?  And he spake, saying These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his  head: but these are come to fray them,  to cast out the horns of the Gentiles,  which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it."

The prophet first saw four horns which perfectly symbolize those Gentile nations which scattered God's people, for horns are used to push and scatter.  Afterwards though, he saw four carpenters, thus lending the impression that they have come to build; for that is the business of carpenters.  When the prophet saw the carpenters he wanted to know the purpose of their presence.  In his answer, the angel first told him that these carpenters are none other than the four horns (Gentile nations) which had scattered Israel, Judah, and Jerusalem.  And these same horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem have now returned as carpenters to cast out the Gentiles and thus free God's people.  It therefore becomes obvious

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       4

that the four horns which Zechariah first saw point back to the time when Israel and Judah were scattered, and the symbolism of the four carpenters must point forward, to a time years later when God is to restore and rebuild the kingdom.  Briefly, then the symbolism of the horns looks back to the destruction of the kingdom, whereas the other, the carpenters, looks forward to the repairing of it.

The question we ought next to consider is whether the fulfillment of the work of the carpenters took place in the time when the Jews returned from Babylon after their 70 years captivity, or whether it refers to some other time; for you remember that the Jews were scattered, and their land was taken, and they went into captivity under Babylon for the 70 years of Jeremiah's prophecy, after which they returned and the city was rebuilt.

Zechariah says there were four horns which would include all the nations that had a part in scattering God's people.  And, moreover, if this prediction met its fulfillment in Nehemiah and Haggai's time, all the Gentiles should have been driven out forever.  But they were not.  Besides, the horns were those nations that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem, and now they have returned to free them and repair the kingdom, and in chapter two of Zechariah's prophecy, God declared

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       5

that not only would His people's kingdom be restored, but many nations would join themselves to the Lord.  Since both Israel and  Judah did not return, and since other nations did not join themselves to the Lord and His people when the Jews returned from Babylon, we cannot say that this prophecy met its fulfillment in the return of the Jews from Babylon.  And since this prophecy has never been fulfilled, it must take place at some future time.

Through it all we see in Zechariah's prophecy a prediction that one day Gentile nations would be engaged in rebuilding the Israelitish kingdom in Palestine that was once destroyed.  We see also that there is to be a world war in which Gentiles outside of Palestine and  the Gentiles within will be involved.  In that war God's people, Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem, are to be delivered and made free and the kingdom will be rebuilt.  That is as plain as anything I have ever seen.

In Luke 21:24 we find these words: "And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled."  It is at the time Zechariah's prophecy is fulfilled -- when the four carpenters drive out the Gentiles -- that Jerusalem shall no more be trodden by the Gentiles, for their time to occupy the Holy Land shall be brought to its end.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       6

Then the Jews are to return and possess the land.  Isaiah, Daniel, and Nahum also bear prophetic testimony to the fact that there is to be war and trouble and deliverance of God's people at the time His Kingdom is restored on earth.  Let us now consider Jeremiah's  prophecy.

Jeremiah, chapters twenty through thirty is one long account, or book, if you please, containing both history and prophecy.  It deals with the wickedness of the Jews, and how God would deal with them if they did not repent.  And the Lord tried every possible way to lead them to repentance, but they would not respond.  In the twenty-sixth chapter is an account of a conference they held to determine what to do with Jeremiah, the Lord's prophet.  Some wanted him killed, but others objected to it and his life was preserved.  One of the most important facts to be observed in these chapters, however, is that the Lord declared that the punishment He was to mete out to His people, the Jews, would sometime be given to the kingdoms of the Gentiles also.  We shall now read

Jer. 30:1, 2 -- "The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book."

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       7

The Lord commands the prophet to write in a book all the words that He had spoken in the preceding chapters.

Jer. 30:3 -- "For, lo, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of My people Israel and Judah, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it."

All that God had said about the destruction of Israel and Judah was to be carefully written in a book, because sometime He is to deliver them both, and He did not want that fact to be forgotten.

I am positive upon Bible authority that the kingdom restored is not to be made up in heaven above.  It is to be made up in the very land where God's people lived until they were driven out because of their sins.  Yes, the Bible teaches that all the twelve tribes some day will return and possess that land -- the land that He gave to their fathers.  After the millennium God's people will possess not only Palestine, but they will possess the whole earth.  They must first, however, return from among the Gentiles and possess the land of their fathers in fulfillment of the prophecy we are now studying.  Necessarily, then, it must take place before the millennium, before God's people go to heaven.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       8

Jer. 30:4-6 -- "And these are the words that the Lord spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah.  For thus saith the Lord; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.  Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child?  wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?"

We heard a noise of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.

We do not have to ask whether a man travails with child, for we know that he does not.  What, then, is the reason for suggesting the question?  It indicates that something is to happen that never happened before.  It will be something as strange as if a man were  to travail with child.  A time of great and  unusual trouble and fear is to overtake the people.  It is to bring great distress and anxiety upon them.

Jer. 30:7 -- "Alas!  for that day is great, so  that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it."

Though it is designated as the time of Jacob's trouble, yet there is no trouble like it in the respect that none is so great.  In this prophecy God is revealing that before God's people return to their father's land there shall be a

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       9

time of trouble that will turn all faces pale.  It will be a time of trembling, of fear, and of trouble such as never was.

Trouble is coming.  It is not going to be a small trouble.  Why is it called Jacob's time of trouble?  Jacob met his trouble while he was returning to the promised land.  Now Jacob is to return again to the Promised Land with all his household, and again he is to meet with great trouble.  That is why it is called the time of Jacob's trouble.  The trouble is to be exceedingly great.

Some of us may think we have hardship now, but the fact is that we do not know what hardship is.  We cannot now comprehend or even imagine how great the trouble will be.  "Alas!  for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it."  The trouble actually is what saves him.  Then the time of trouble is coming for the good of the latter-day Jacobites.  It is coming to deliver them. through this most difficult time, it is the man who has the greatest faith in God that will fear the least.  The more faith one has then the greater will be his deliverance.

We have learned that in that great time of trouble those represented by Jacob will be delivered.  Daniel calls it a time of trouble such as never was, and he also foretells that Michael

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       10

shall stand up and deliver everyone whose name is written in the book.  Why did both prophets write about it?  Jeremiah perhaps deals more directly with the deliverance of the people and makes plain the time God is to accomplish the deliverance.

Jer. 30:8 -- "For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him."

To break one's yoke and bonds means to make one free.  It is from the Assyrian yoke that Jacob is going to be made free.

Jer. 30:9 -- "But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them."

Now we will read the last part of Jer. 30:8 again: "...and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him."  The reason there will be no strangers is that no one will serve himself there.  In the religious realm, strangers serve themselves rather than the Lord and their king.  But in the Kingdom all will serve the Lord their God and David their king.  If I am a minister of the gospel for what I can get out of it, then I am serving none but myself; but if I am serving for the good of God's people, then I am serving God.  There are many people today dying for their country.  Should

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       11

not a Christian be willing to die, if necessary, for the cause of Christ?  There shall be no more strangers among Jacob that will serve themselves,  "but they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them."

There are two principals brought to light in this statement: One is religious and the other is civil.  The one religious is none other than the Lord their God; and the one civil is David their king.  If He is to raise David to them then it must be that they are going to have a theocratic form of government as they had in David's time.

Jer. 30:10 -- "Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the Lord; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid."

Jacob should not fear, because he shall be saved out of his trouble.  God is going to deliver him by a miracle.  If it were not a fearfully troublous time they would not need to be told to fear not nor be dismayed.  It is to be a terrible time of trouble just before Jacob is delivered.  Certainly, then, the statement that there is a silver lining behind every cloud is true in this case.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       12

Jer. 30:11-13 -- "For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of  thee: but I will correct thee in measure,  and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.  For thus saith the Lord, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous.  There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines."

God's people are to receive punishment but it is only going to be in measure.  The  incurable bruise and grievous wound is the kingdom lost.  Though the bruise is incurable, yet they are to be delivered.  Only a miracle can heal an incurable bruise.  Just before God's people are delivered they will be painfully aware that there is no possible way for them to be delivered.  But a miracle is to take place.  Then all will know that God alone wrought their deliverance.

Jer. 30:14, 15 -- "All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the  chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.  Why criest thou for thine affliction?  thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine  iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       13

things unto thee."

God's people suffered the loss of their kingdom because of their sins.

Jer. 30:16 -- "Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all  thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey."

This is to begin to be fulfilled when the time of the Gentiles is fulfilled.

Jer. 30:17 -- "For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after."

The adversaries will make sport of Zion because apparently no one will be looking after them, and they will have no following or friends -- no one to plead their cause.

Jer. 30:18 -- "Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwelling-places; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof."

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       14

The city shall be rebuilt and the palace shall remain.

Jer. 30:19 -- "And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small."

They are going to multiply and be a great people.

Jer. 30:20 -- "Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before Me, and I will punish all that oppress them."

  Their oppressors are still there.

Jer. 30:21 -- "And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto Me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto Me?  saith the Lord."

The nobles shall not be of the Gentiles, for they shall have their own government.

Jer. 30:22-24 -- "And ye shall be My people, and I will be your God.  Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       15

continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked.  The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return, until He have done it, and until He have performed the intents of His heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it."

To find what the whirlwind is, let us turn to

Jer. 25:15-18 -- "For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at My hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.  And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.  Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me: To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse;  as it is this day."

It made Judah a curse.  Jerusalem was first among the nations to take this curse.

Jer. 25:19 -- "Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people."

Egypt was next.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       16

Jer. 25:20-29 -- "And all the mingled people and all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron and the remnant of Ashdod, Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, and all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea, Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners, and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled People that dwell in the desert, and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes.  And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.  Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.  And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith  the Lord of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.  For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by My name and should ye be utterly unpunished?  Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts."

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       17

The Lord here declares that He commenced His punishment with His own people and He is not going to excuse other people from punishment.  All the nations to whom He sent it were to drink of the curse, and what He did to punish His people is a sample of what He will do to the nations, because He will not allow them to go unpunished.

Jer. 25:30, 31 -- "Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The Lord shall roar from on high, and utter His voice from His holy habitation; He shall mightily roar upon His habitation; He shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.  A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, He will plead with all flesh; He will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord."

  The wicked will be destroyed.

Jer. 25:32 -- "Thus saith the Lord of hosts Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth."

Evil will go forth from nation to nation, for God will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth.  It means war.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       18

Jer. 25:33 -- "And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground."

This verse is not describing the conditions that will prevail as a result of the coming of the brightness of the Lord when He comes in the clouds.  This is a slaughter from the great whirlwind of Jer. 25:32.  It is from war:   Why should the Lord first bring this on Judah and Jerusalem and then to the nations?  Because they had the greatest light and therefore they had the least reason to be wicked.  Then when this war starts in the time of the deliverance of God's people, the most enlightened people will suffer first.  Please return now to

Jer. 30:23 -- "Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked."

This whirlwind is warfare which does not arrive and then quickly die out.  It stays long.  It is to start in the latter end of the time God's people are scattered among the Gentiles just before His people are delivered.

Jer. 31:1 -- "At the same time, saith the Lord will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people."

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       19

The people that were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness, the Gentile world, showing that the sword fell while the people were still in the Gentile nations.  Those that were left will be restored to their own land.  It is in the time when the true ones in Israel are left and find grace with God.

Jer. 31:3, 4 -- "The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.   Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry."

She will again be a kingdom as she once was.

Jer. 31:5, 6 -- "Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.  For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the Mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God."

Judah is in Zion; Ephraim refers to the kingdom of Israel (the ten-tribe kingdom).  Therefore the day is coming that Ephraim will go to Judah in Zion to the Lord God.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       20

Jer. 31:7 -- "For thus saith the Lord; sing  with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye praise ye, and say, O Lord, save Thy people, the remnant of Israel."

There are people yet to be saved.

Jer. 31:8 -- "Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither."

  A great company shall return.

Jer. 31:9, 10 -- "They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers  of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn.  Hear the Word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare It in the isles afar off, and say,  He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock."

An announcement is to be made to the nations informing them of the good things the Lord will do for Israel.

Jer. 31:11, 12 -- "For the Lord hath redeemed

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       21

Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.  Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of  Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of  the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow  any more at all."

Let us now turn to Isaiah 30 and read another  prophet's prediction of the very same prophecy we have just read about this afternoon.

Isaiah chapter thirty describes the wickedness of Judah and Israel, and sets forth God's intention to destroy their kingdoms.  Let us now read

Isa. 30:18 -- "And therefore will the Lord wait, that He may be gracious unto you and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for Him."

In the previous verses the Lord sets forth the determination of His people to go their own way which will lead to loss and shame.  But in this verse He declares that He will wait for a time in mercy for the true ones among them, those who w.l. wait for Him.  Thus will He be exalted.  And a special blessing is in store for

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       22

those who do wait for Him.

Isa. 30:19 -- "For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: He will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when He shall hear it, He will answer thee."

They shall dwell in Zion and Jerusalem, not in some other place.

Isa. 30:20 -- "And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers."

Though the kingdom was to be broken up, yet in the time of restoration their teachers would be seen of the people.

Isa. 30:21 -- "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left."

When the horse comes to the forks in the road, he wonders which road you want him to take.  All he wants is but a gentle touch of the reins by the driver to indicate the road he is to follow.  So with God's people.  The still small voice will clearly direct them in the right way if they will follow it.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       23

Isa. 30:22-24 -- "Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it,  Get thee hence.  Then shall He give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.  The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear the ground shall eat clean provender which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with  the fan."

  There shall be prosperity.

Isa. 30:25, 26 -- "And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.  Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of His people, and healeth the stroke of their wound."

The day when the Lord binds the breach of His people and heals the stroke of their wound is in the day of restoration.  It is the day the kingdom is returned to God's people.   At that time the moon and the sun will shine many

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       24

times brighter.  This of course is symbolical language, the sun signifying Bible Truth.  If the sun is to shine seven times brighter it would indicate that the Truth would become clearer and brighter.  Since it is even now growing brighter and brighter we see in it  another evidence that the time this prophecy is to meet its fulfillment is almost here.

Isa. 30:27 -- "Behold, the name of the Lord cometh from far, burning with His anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: His lips are full of indignation, and His tongue as a devouring fire."

The sun shines seven times brighter in the day that the name of the Lord cometh.  This is speaking of the day of the Lord.  And according to Malachi, the Lord was to send the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord should come.

Isa. 30:28 -- "And His breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of  the people, causing them to err."

He shall come to sift the nations with vanity, for He knows that vanity appeals to them.  Through it they will be led where God wants all to go who follow after vanity.  They will err in their ways through specially designed

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       25

vanity which God shall send them, because they follow vain things.

Isa. 30:29 -- "Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel."

That is the way you are going to feel if you follow the Lord in Truth.

Isa. 30:30, 31 -- "And the Lord shall cause His glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of His arm, with the  indignation of His anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.  For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod."

Speaking of this event, Nahum said the fir trees shall be terribly shaken, and the trees will fall.  What is happening in the shaking that has already commenced in today's world?  Some great men have fallen, and it is likely that the reason the woman Babylon will be put to rule the world will be due to the trees (rulers) having fallen in the shaking that is now only commencing.

The next chapter of Isaiah, like the preceding chapter, starts with the subject of the fall of Judah, and it also brings in a promise of restoration.  We are told that the reason Judah fell was that they trusted in Egypt rather than obey God.  Let us continue by reading

Isa. 31:4 -- "For thus hath the Lord spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the Lord of hosts come down to fight for Mount Zion, and for the hill thereof."

The Lord is not going to be afraid; He is going to come down to fight for Mount Zion -- the kingdom -- to restore it.  How do we know it is the kingdom?  Please turn with me to

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       27

Isa. 1:27-31 -- "Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.  And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.  For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.  For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.  And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn  together, and none shall quench them."

That is what happened anciently to Israel and Judah.  But what is to happen at the last?

Isa. 2:2 -- "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it."

The hill of the Lord then is the kingdom  restored.  Let us continue with

Isa. 31:5, 6 -- "As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also He will deliver it; and passing over  He will preserve it.  Turn ye unto Him from  Whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted."

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       28

God is calling for reformation in a people other than the children of Israel who have deeply revolted against God.

Isa. 31:7, 8 -- "For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.  Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited."

"Then" -- when this idolatry is cast away by "every man" -- the Assyrian will fall by the sword.  In the time when God pleads for His people to return to Him, and when they do it, then the Assyrian will fall.  Not before that.  It was because of their idolatry that they lost the land, and God is not going to bring His people back to their land with their idolatry.  Therefore we and all God's people must not delay putting away our idols.  We had better cast them out and be ready on time to go to the place where it will be so much better than it is in the present world.  For there none will be tired or sick or lonely or afraid.

Isa. 31:8 -- "Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       29

men shall be discomfited."

The Assyrian will fall by a sword which God Himself shall send.  Assyria will not fall by a mean man.  His fall will come under circumstances that will clearly show that God caused it to happen.  When ancient Israel fell it was God who brought it, it was God who was responsible for it.  So it will be also with Assyria unless she, too, turns to God.  Moreover, it is a vain thing for them to look to some other nation for help.  None can stay God's punishment.  Only God can help at such a time.

Isa. 31:9 -- "And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the Lord, Whose fire is in Zion, and His furnace in Jerusalem."

At the time God's purifying fire is in Zion and His purifying furnace is in Jerusalem the Assyrian will pass over to his stronghold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign.  From this we can see that Nineveh will not lose out completely when she loses in Palestine.  She is to lose out in Palestine first and then flee to her stronghold.  This has  reference to the time when the Kingdom is set up before the scarlet-colored beast comes, before the woman rules the beast.  Indeed, this prophecy is talking about Assyria, not Babylon.  It shows that Assyria will lose out in the promised land

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       30

before she loses her stronghold.  The Kingdom, then, is to be established before the complete fall of Assyria takes place.

The Kingdom is going to be established, moreover, in Zion and Jerusalem, not in Washington or Mt. Carmel.  And many peoples and nations shall flow unto It.  It will happen just as soon as "every man" casts away his idols.  It is useless to expect it before.  As soon as that happens Assyria will fall in the land.  The coming of the Kingdom then is not waiting for anyone but God's own people.

Let us return to Jeremiah and read a few more verses from the chapter we were studying earlier.

Jer. 31:13 -- "Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow."

Both old and young will rejoice together.

Jer. 31:14 -- "And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, saith the Lord."

  All will be satisfied.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       31

Jer. 31:15, 16 -- "Thus saith the Lord; A  voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.  Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy."

This includes all God's people living and dead.

Jer. 31:17, 18 -- "And there is hope in thine end, saith the Lord, that thy children shall come again to their own border.  I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself  thus, Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be  turned; for thou art the Lord my God."

How different is Ephraim at the time of his deliverance compared with what he was like when he was taken captive!  Once he was like a wild bullock; but now he is tame.

We have read a number of Scriptures here today.  Now let us very briefly summarize what we learned from it. We learned

  (1)  What is the time of Jacob's trouble;

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 1, 2                       32

  (2)  The Kingdom will be set up in a time of war;

  (3)  The whirlwind and sword (war) is the evil, the curse that is to be sent to all the nations to whom the Lord will send it;

  (4)  The evil (war) is to go from nation to nation and is not to be of short duration;

  (5)  God's people will be delivered in a time of great trouble;

  (6)  They must cast away all idolatry as a prerequisite to being delivered;

  (7)  The Gentiles will have their trouble when they are called out of Babylon.  Today's study dealt mainly with Jacob's own trouble and about his being delivered from the Assyrian yoke.

The great and dreadful day of the Lord is fast coming.  Let us each be ready for it on time lest we lose out altogether.

(This study was given by V.T. Houteff  September 30, 1939 and June 22, 1940.)

Through the prophecy of Isaiah 7 and 8 we plainly see that God's people are approaching  a time that will demand of them great faith to believe implicitly in God's Word only.

Since the experiences which are recorded in the Bible were written for ensamples or object lessons for God's people today (1 Cor. 10:11), let us read a few verses from Isaiah 7 and then Isaiah 8, and glean the lesson there may be hidden there for us.

Isa. 7:1 -- "And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of  Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward   Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it."

This verse in conjunction with the verses which follow it reveal that God favored Judah (the two-tribe kingdom) even though at the same time Ephraim (the ten-tribe kingdom) were also His people.  The reason He favored Judah in this instance was that their brethren (Ephraim) had joined heathen forces to fight against Judah.  Therefore, God could not bless Ephraim's

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       3

Through this experience we should gain the lesson as Christians that God will not bless the endeavors of any of His people when they join heathen forces in order to gain strength in their effort to overcome their brethren in Christ whom for some reason they wish to have put out of their way.  Such an alliance cannot prosper.

Isa. 7:2 -- "And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim.  And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind."

The people of Judah were afraid.

How would we feel if a like experience should befall us now?  What would sustain us through it? -- The Lord again would be the only hope of His people.

Isa. 7:3-9 -- "Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field; and say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of  Remaliah.  Because Syria,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       4

Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,   Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.  For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.  And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son.  If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established."

God was here telling Judah that they should not fear this alliance because He was not sponsoring it.  Israel and Syria were dependent  on nothing greater than their kings and the capitals of their nations.  Judah was instructed to depend on God's Word which declared that  these allied powers would fail to overcome  them.  Moreover, Judah was told, "If ye will  not believe, surely ye shall not be established."  In other words, Judah was told that if they did not believe what God was telling them they would lose out.  Their survival, therefore, was wholly conditional on their complete belief in God's promise only that the alliance formed against them would fail.

The day is coming when you and I, too, must

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       5

depend entirely on God's Word.  But unless we know what God's Word is it is impossible for us to believe Him.

Isa. 8:9 -- "Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces."

God here is challenging a move toward a federation of nations.

With World War I we began to hear serious proposals for the associating of nations into a single league.  Today the proposal is revived, and efforts are being made toward forming a strong and workable union of nations.  Indeed, not only is the idea of international federation growing more and more prevalent, but in the minds of many great men, there is the positive conviction that the successful continuance of their nation's way of life is utterly dependent upon the closest association and cooperation of all those nations which share their way of life.

The warning given in this chapter to nations and peoples is not to associate and gird themselves or take counsel together, as it would only come to naught.  There may be some significance in the repetitions of the warning.  If so, it would indicate that either two or possibly three attempts would be made among nations

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       6

to associate and gird themselves, and it would only end in complete failure.  If there should yet be another attempt and there be involved a war against Judah, then Judah, having no adequate means of defense among themselves, will have to let God be their means of deliverance.

Isa. 8:10 -- "Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word and it shall not stand: for God is with us."

God's people take a strong and independent attitude because they believe that God is with them.  Most human beings are somewhat like Peter.  We have great faith until we meet face to face a trial.  When the trial here prophesied comes, though, God's people must know that God is with them, and they must firmly stand on His side.  Through this verse we are made to understand the real reason for the certain failure of the nations in their attempt to obviate the fulfillment of their fears.  God is not with them.  It becomes distinctly apparent, therefore, that it is the pressing duty of every God-fearing country and individual sincerely to seek God's will and be with Him, if we are to survive and  prosper.

Isa. 8:11, 12 -- "For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying, Say ye not, A confederacy,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       7

to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid."

God's people are not only commanded not to participate in the confederacy, but they are to oppose it "to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy."

"Neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid."  It is upon the root of some fear that the confederacy is formed.  But that which constitutes their fear is not to constitute the fear of God's people.

Isa. 8:13 -- "Sanctify the Lord of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread."

God alone is to be revered; God alone is to be feared and dreaded.  If there were no possibility for fear at the fulfillment of this chapter,  there would be no need for this reassurance and instruction.  It is indicative of the fact that God's People will see themselves absolutely helpless, and they will appear helpless to all others.  Then they will receive deliverance from God, and all will behold it.

If God's people are approaching the time when they must either confederate or sacrifice their lives, they must be developing that faith which will cause them to believe that "in those

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       8

days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them." Rev. 9:6.

Isa. 8:14 -- "And He shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of  Jerusalem."

A sanctuary is a place of refuge.  Besides being a place of refuge to God's faithful ones, He is also to be a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel -- Judah and Israel -- and a gin and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.  Jerusalem was the ruling city of Judah.  From this it is plain that through this confederacy God is to be a gin and snare to antitypical Judah.

Isa. 8:15 -- "And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken."

This prophecy declares that the confederacy will be a snare -- a trap -- and that many will  fall and be taken in it.  It will be a fearful trap and will separate God's people.  Thus is the Lord going to test all His people and let them reveal just how much faith each of them has.  In the face of this warning, we must make the necessary preparation so that we will not fall into the snare.  God has clearly forewarned His people so that they will not be taken by

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       9

In Isaiah 24 we are told that there would be a shaking as of an olive tree and but few men would be left.

The confederacy that we are studying this afternoon commences before the Loud Cry and before the slaughter of Ezekiel 9.  It is not the Image of the Beast, for this association precedes the Image of the Beast, and the confederacy is formed when the nations are  girding themselves for war.  Put another way, the confederacy will commence after the sealing and perhaps just before the slaughter of Ezekiel 9.  Moreover, it is in the time when the Christian nations are united that the woman "Babylon" will sit on the seven "heads" (Rev. 17:9), depicting also the union of the churches under Babylon.

All those who are not expecting the confederacy, but instead are expecting next the reassertion of Roman church supremacy or the battle of Armageddon or something else are going to fall into this snare, for it will appear to them harmless and perhaps even a good thing.  But it will be their trap.

Isa. 8:16-18 -- "Bind up the testimony, seal the law among My disciples.  And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 3, 4                       10

Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in Mount Zion."

Someone will have faith.  God does not mean by this that He is keeping His blessings away from Jacob, but it shows that though we cannot see His face, we can witness His power.

Isa. 8:19 -- "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God?  for the living to the dead?"

This shows that the world is going spiritualistic.

Isa. 8:20 -- "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them."

This does not mean that they are devils, but rather they are in darkness.  When they learn the Truth, then they shall speak according to the law and the testimony of Jesus.

Isa. 8:21, 22 -- "And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.  And they

"The Sabbath is a golden clasp that unites God and His people.  But the Sabbath command has been broken.  God's holy day has been desecrated.  The Sabbath has been torn from its place by the  man of sin, and a common working-day has been exalted in its stead.  A breach has been made in the law, and this breach is to be repaired.  The true Sabbath is to be exalted to its rightful position as God's rest-day.  In the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah is outlined the work which God's people are to do.  They are to magnify the law, and make it honorable, to build up the old waste places, and to raise up the foundations of many generations.  To those who do this work  God says: 'Thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.  If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.' Verses 12-14.

"The Sabbath question is to be the issue in the great final conflict in which all the world

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       3

will act a part.  Men have honored Satan's principles above the principles that rule in the heavens.  They have accepted the spurious  Sabbath, which Satan has exalted as the sign of his authority.  But God has set His seal upon His royal requirement.  Each Sabbath institution bears the name of its author, an ineffaceable mark that shows the authority of each.  It is our work to lead the people to understand this.  We are to show them that it is of vital consequence whether they bear the mark of God's kingdom or the mark of the kingdom of rebellion, for they acknowledge themselves subjects of the kingdom whose mark they bear.  God has called us to uplift  the standard of His down-trodden Sabbath.  How important, then, that our example in Sabbath-keeping should be right." -- Testimonies,  Vol. 6, pp. 351-353.

From time to time questions have come into this Office regarding various important aspects of the Sabbath.  Before his death, Brother Houteff prepared material in question-and-answer form for a tract dealing with the subject of the Sabbath.  Since it was never published, and since it is important that we have a thorough understanding of the Sabbath Truth, the Code takes pleasure in introducing a series of question-and-answer articles taken from the tract material.  The question to be discussed in this issue is:

A Truth-seeker writes: "I am sending you literature on the seemingly Scriptural doctrine that the Bible Sabbath falls on Friday not on Saturday nor on Sunday.  It looks to me unanswerable.  Please give me a

Searching examination by Heaven's all-revealing microscope (the Spirit and Word) discovers the Friday-sabbath literature to erect the entire structure of its doctrine on Exodus 16, verses 1 and 2, which its author terms "The Keys to God's Week."  And so if under Heaven's own microscope his position proves to be solidly and securely footed in fact, then the doctrine is to be reverently accepted.  But if such examination of the position proves it untenable, then of course it should be dismissed.  Since the position is based on Exodus 16:1-12, we quote those verses:

"And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.  And the whole congregation

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       5

of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: and the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

"Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or no.  And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.  And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt: and in the morning then ye shall see the glory of the Lord; for that He heareth your murmurings against the Lord: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?  And Moses said, This shall be, when the Lord shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against Him: and what are we?  your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord.

"And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       6

Come near before the Lord: for He hath heard your murmurings.  And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God." Ex. 16:1-12.

On these verses the Friday-sabbath author's featured thoughts are presented in the following fourteen quoted paragraphs.

"We are also given the divine connection, or the true relationship of God's days and God's months in the 16th chapter of Exodus.  God proved to the children of Israel which each day of the week was by 'the falling of the manna.'  The first manna fell on the 16th day of the second month, the day after the 15th, see Ex. 16:1-22.  This marked the first day of the Bible week, Creation Week.  Now the 16th day of this second month of God's year as is shown elsewhere in this study, is now called Saturday under the Roman name.  The 2nd day on which the manna fell is now called Sunday, and the 3rd day is called Monday, the 4th day is called

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       7

Tuesday, the 5th day is called Wednesday the 6th day or 'Preparation Day.' is called Thursday; and the 7th day on which no manna fell is now called Friday.  This same relationship was maintained from Creation for we see there that the first time the moon ever registered time, which would be the first day of the month, was on the 5th day of the week. Gen. 1:14-18.

"Now carefully read in review about the departure of the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. (Exo. 12).  You will find that they were instructed to keep the passover (Abib 14) in Egypt and then leave on the following day (Abib 15). Lev. 23:5-6,  Num. 33:2-3.

"We can understand the wisdom of God in giving the children of Israel His True Time for He was showing them important feast days to keep and, as we will soon see.  He was going to give them His laws to keep.

"According to Num. 33:2-3 the children of Israel departed out of the land of Egypt on the 15th day of the first month (Abib).

"It was in the wanderings of the children of Israel that God performed one of the greatest of all Bible miracles: the falling of the manna.  Have you passed this scripture over as being only a miraculous feeding of the children of Israel to keep them from starving to death?  God had a deeper purpose.  According to Exodus 16:3,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       8

God purposes to prove 'whether they will walk in my law or no.'

"There is an outstanding date given in Exodus.

"Exo. 16:1: And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt."

"Two and one-half or three million people had been on this journey for thirty days and all the provisions they brought had evidently been consumed and their condition became so desperate on this particular 15th day of the second month Zif, (refer to calendar), that the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron.  They would rather have died at the hand of the Lord in Egypt. (Ex. 16:2-3).

"But on that same 15th day God made a promise through Moses, saying:

"Exo. 16:12: I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.

"Now the first morning after the 15th would

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       9

be the morning of the 16th: the first day that manna fell in the wilderness. It is declared to us clearly that this is the first day of the week, for Exodus 16:22 says they gathered it every morning for six days. Also see Ex. 16:26.

"So let us count: Manna fell first on the 16th day of the second month (Zif) or the first day of the Bible week; 17th -- 2nd day of week, 18th -- 3rd day of week, l9th -- 4th day of week; 20th -- 5th day of week; 21st -- 6th day of week, and twice as much Manna fell. On the 22nd there was none that fell, for this was the 7th day of the week or the Holy Sabbath of Creation. Exo. 16:23-30.  This teaches us as it taught them the true seven day cycle or Bible week.  So we can truly connect together God's Bible Week:

Day of week: .... 1   2   3  4   5   6   7

Month of Zif: ...  16 17 18 19 20 21 22

"God's Seventh Day Sabbath Is Called Friday On Roman Gregorian Calendar.

"Referring once more to the calendar, we use the 'key week' and find that we can trace forward or backward.  Tracing backward, we find that the 1st day of the 1st month of the 1st year of a 3 year cycle comes on the 5th day of God's week.

"This new moon showing the first day of

the first year of the cycle always comes in on the day which the Roman calendar calls Wednesday.  Actually God's day begins on the previous evening (i.e. Tuesday evening,  Roman time) according to scripture. Gen. 1:23.

"Since Wednesday is the day of the new moon, and the new moon comes on the 5th day of God's week then we can safely say that the 6th day falls on Thursday and the 7th day Sabbath of God's Week is called Friday, Roman time.

"A Bible day is from sunset to sunset. Thursday sunset to Friday sunset is  actually God's Sabbath." -- God's Calendar,  pp. 3,7.

These comments by the Friday-sabbath author on Exodus 16:1-12 reveal that his position has as its basis the assumption that there is unbroken chronological continuity between the event of Exodus 16:1 and the events of  Exodus 16:2-16.  The reasoning is such as to make it appear that in the evening of the fifteenth day, the day the Israelites arrived in the wilderness of Sin, the quail came up, and that in the morning of the next day, the sixteenth, the manna fell.  Upon this key premise the Friday-sabbath doctrine is built, and thereupon, it must stand or fall.  Let us therefore, prayerfully scrutinize it through the all-searching lens of the Spirit of Truth in the word itself.

Close analysis of the Scriptural record (Exodus 16)

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       11

under consideration reveals that the only day of the month Inspiration names is the fifteenth, the day of the Exodus' arrival in the wilderness of Sin (Ex. 16:1).  The scripture does not name the day or the month upon which Israel murmured; and it does not name the month or the day upon which the manna first fell, nor the day upon which the quail came up.

These facts became absolutely evident when it is noted that not all the time elements of Exodus 16:2 to 12 are chronological or immediately connected with those of Exodus 16:1, the verse which deals with the day of Israel's arrival in the wilderness of Sin.  Verses 2 to 12 and on to 35 briefly recount only the most significant aspects of the most significant experiences which befell them during their forty years' sojourn in the wilderness.

Too, these verses make it equally evident that none of the events they recount took place on the days immediately following the Exodus' arrival in the wilderness of Sin.  Any careful comparison of the records will bear out that the events in point cover a considerable period of time, and that there is a gap in time between Exodus 16:1 and Exodus 16:2; also that, chronologically, even the events of Exodus 17 come between the events of Exodus 16, verses 1 and 2.

The fact is, that aside from stating the day of the month the Exodus arrived in the wilderness

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       12

to be the fifteenth, the record does not name any other day at all in connection with either the falling of the manna or the coming of the quail, but simply points out that the one came in the evening (of an unrecorded day), and the other in the morning (of an unrecorded day).  Furthermore, and again contrary to the theory, the manna came first and the quail came days later, as we shall  now see.

Since the book of Numbers, chapter 11, records the manna and the quail events in greater detail than does Exodus 16, we shall briefly examine the account as given there:

"We remember the fish which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: but now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes."   Num. 11:5, 6.

Being displeased with their murmurings over the manna, the Lord commanded Moses:

"...say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and ye shall eat flesh:... Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; but even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you...."  Num. 11:18-20.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       13

These and the preceding verses of the chapter definitely disclose that the quail came after the Israelites murmured against the manna; and that after they lost taste for it they became the more querulous because of their unbelief in the Lord's ability to provide flesh food for such a great multitude.  To their surprise, though "...there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.  And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.  And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague." Num. 11:31-33.

These verses of Scripture bring forth the firm fact that the quail did not come ahead of the manna (Num. 11:1-9, 13, 18-23, 31-33) and that they were there not for just one evening, but rather for at least two days (Num. 11:32).  This is proof in the absolute that the day of Israel's arrival (the fifteenth day) in the wilderness of Sin (Ex. 16:1) was not the day the quail came, as the Friday-sabbath author

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       14

supposes it to be.

It is surprising, too, that he has failed to note that it was not in God's purpose to feed His people with flesh at all during the forty years; no one could imagine that He was capricious to give them meat to eat right at the start, then abruptly to take it away from them and to put them on manna instead.  Moreover had such been the case, then such, rather than the contrary, would have been the record.

Also, it is understandable that just as soon as they saw that there was no way of making a living in the wilderness, they faithlessly  envisaged themselves reduced to want, poverty, starvation, and death, and straightway began to recriminate Moses over their fear-anticipated lot, and to cry out bitterly for sustenance, for food of any kind, rather than for a special kind.  Being pitiful of their fears and mindful of their needs, the Lord sent them "bread [manna] from heaven." Ex. 16:4.  Soon, though, they tired of the manna, and began to murmur anew in lust for flesh food that was not for their good.  Thus it was that, though contrary to His wise purpose for them, the Lord sent them quail (Ex. 16:8).  Still, though, the manna as usual fell the next morning.  So they then had both bread and flesh to feast on -- yea, flesh to the fatal full (Ex. 16:12, 13; Num. 11:31-33).

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       15

"Yea," solemnly affirms the Psalmist, "they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?  Behold, He smote the rock, that the waters gushed out and the streams overflowed; can He give bread also?  Can He provide flesh for His people?" Ps. 78:19, 20.

The logic of the events in the sequence thus established by the Psalmist, gives corroborative evidence: (1) that the "bread" (the manna) came down quite some time after the fifteenth day;  (2) that it came after their second advance into the wilderness of Sin -- as far as to Rephidim (Ex. 17:1), the place where Moses struck the rock which then gave water; and (3) that the quail came into the camp still after that.  To restate it, first came water from the rock, then came down the manna, and after it came the quail.  The Psalmist's inspired statement -- "Behold, He smote the rock...; can He give bread also?  can He Provide flesh for His people?" -- declares that the Lord had already caused the rock to give water even before they faithlessly cried out their doubt of His ability to give them bread and that next they cried out doubt of His ability to give them flesh!

Failing to see and to reckon with these truly key facts, the Friday-sabbath author mistakenly assumes that the quail came first, then the manna, then the water.  Evidently he overlooks  the fact that Exodus 16, itself, shows that the

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       16

events recorded there cover a period of time (all the days of their wanderings in the wilderness of Sin) rather than simply a few days following their arrival in the wilderness of Sin.  The events of the chapter include even the spying out of the land, also the giving of the "Testimony" of the Lord (the law) from Sinai, as well as the building of the tabernacle and the furnishing of it (Ex. 16:33-35; 40:2-6).  All these events are recorded in the same chapter, although as we have already seen, the first event chronologically to follow the event of the fifteenth day -- the day of their arrival in the wilderness of Sin (Ex. 16:1) -- was Moses' smiting the rock at Rephidim (Ex. 17).

The Friday-sabbath author's next step in the process of constructing his theory, is the fallacious contention that the "evening" (Ex. 12:6) of the day in which the preparations for the Passover were to begin was not the afternoon of the fourteenth day, but that it was at sundown on the thirteenth day, and that therefore the eating of the Passover, "the feast," took place then -- at the beginning of the fourteenth day.  This he does in spite of the fact that Inspiration definitely commands:

"Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel,  saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:...and ye shall keep it up until

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       17

the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening." Ex. 12:3,6.

Carefully mark, the command specifically exacts that the sacrificial lamb be separated from the flock on the tenth day of the first month, kept alive but up to the fourteenth, not up to the thirteenth, then killed in the evening of the same day, that is, the lamb was to be killed toward the end of the fourteenth not at the beginning of it.  The margin places the time of killing the lamb "between the two evenings."  Biblically and traditionally the one "evening" is the time after the noon sun begins to decline -- the afternoon, after 1 P.M.; the other "evening" embraces the period of dusk, from the time the sun sets to bedtime.  These two limits fixed the hours for all the  preparations.

Thus Israel made all these preparations during the fourteenth day then ate the sacrifice during the night of the fifteenth  day (Ex. 12:18; Lev. 23:6), the very night  of the season in which, as the Bible plainly  states, they not only ate the Passover but also left Egypt (Num. 33:3; Lev. 23:6).  To make this important fact graphically clear,  we subjoin the following diagram.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       18

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       19

Just how, therefore, in view of these clear-cut Biblical records, one can possibly conclude as the Friday-sabbath author does, that the Passover feast was celebrated at the end of the thirteenth day (which according to Biblical reckoning* would be the night of the fourteenth day), although the Scriptures specifically state that it is celebrated during the night of the fifteenth day is indeed beyond all fathoming.  Not only the Bible's decisive explicitness concerning the time for this important celebration, but history and tradition as well, make virtually impossible anyone's missing the facts.  Yet in spite of this and contrary to it all the Friday-sabbath author is led into rationalizing a one-day cutback of events -- back to the thirteenth day -- in order to tailor the time to fit the theory.  Since he must have read the Bible through, then it is difficult to escape the conclusion that the error seems not so much a matter of misinterpreting, as a matter of deliberately side-stepping.  Then too, the figures on his charts definitely indicate that he has, in an attempt to make the theory fit with other events, embodied in his study the erroneous interpretation that Christ's statement,"...three Days and three nights in the heart of the earth," means three days and three nights in the tomb.  Upon this presumptuous premise, together with his misapplication of the time of Christ's crucifixion

*The dark part ahead of the light part of the day.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       20

and resurrection, and with his "quail-manna" theory, he builds up the Friday-sabbath doctrine, obviously not reckoning with the inevitability that one day Truth must storm its sandy foundations and topple it to the ground.

It will now be observed that in order to prop up the Friday-sabbath theory, the author of it was forced also to try to match the day and hour of Jesus' death with the day and hour in which the Passover lamb was killed.  Thus he was forced into shifting back the time of  the Passover feast from the fifteenth to the fourteenth day of the month, although contrary to the Scriptures!  By such maneuvering and rationalizing, the author has the Passover lamb killed and Christ crucified on the same day, the thirteenth, Wednesday.  So he goes on to explain that Jesus could not have been alive to celebrate the Passover.  He then rationalizes Matt. 28:1 into placing the resurrection on the seventeenth, Saturday evening.  But even after all this manipulating, he is not able to match the time of the events, for although he contends that the Passover lamb was killed at sunset, yet he has to admit that Jesus was crucified between sunrise and noon-day -- at "the third hour." Mark 15:25.

He does this shifting of events even in the face of the Scriptural facts that Jesus spent the Passover day, the fourteenth, with His disciples (Mark 14:12-25); that He celebrated

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       21

with them the Passover feast on the fifteenth, Wednesday night (Mark 14:18); that He was arrested that same night immediately after the Passover celebration, then tried by Annas and by Pilate, and crucified and buried at about sundown (Mark 15:42-46) on the sixteenth, Friday; finally, that He arose on the eighteenth, Sunday, the first day of the week (Mark 16:9).  Indeed, the Friday-sabbath author seems utterly to ignore all these Biblical records of the events.  And in this he shares in common with all the other  three-days-and-three-nights Scripture-perverters.

In a desperate endeavor to substantiate their three-days-and-three-nights theory all these perverters of the Scriptures try to tell us that the "preparation day" and the Sabbath" of Matthew 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31 were not Friday and Saturday but some other days of the week.  Significantly, though, is the observation that they often refer to unknown and so-called original manuscripts in Hebrew and Greek -- to anything and everything that they can make to serve their purpose among those who have no way of checking them.  Sooner or later, though, the truth leaks out that these many-translation-quoters never quote from the Greek Bible "the preparation day" and "the Sabbath."  And why not? -- for the very good reason that in every instance It reads [greek word] (Friday), and [greek word] (Saturday), where the English reads "preparation

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       22

day, and "Sabbath"!

Take next the "wave sheaf" which is typical of the resurrection of Christ.  Having to be offered during the Passover week and on no other day but "on the morrow after the Sabbath" (Lev. 23:11) -- on the first day of the week -- it, too, points out that the day in which the Lord was to rise from the dead, was to be on the first day of the week, the day after the seventh day Sabbath.  Sabbath-dodgers, though, are trying to make us believe that "the morrow after the Sabbath," is not the day after the seventh-day Sabbath, when clearly the antecedent (in Lev. 23:3) is the Sabbath of the Decalogue.  Besides, though occasionally a rest day in the Scriptures is called "a sabbath," never is any day other than the seventh day Sabbath called "the Sabbath."

Further, the Sanctuary law demanding "seven sabbaths" from the day of the sheaf offering to the Pentecost (Lev. 23:15), absolutely eliminates the possibility of any day other than the seventh-day Sabbath to precede the day of the sheaf offering and thus the resurrection, and the Pentecost.  That is in order to get seven Sabbaths within 49 days and have the 50th day come on the day after the Sabbath (Lev. 23:16), on the first day of the week, one has to start counting from the first day of the week, Sunday.  No other day will do.  Try it and see.  Consider, too, the tradition of celebrating Easter (the

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       23

resurrection) on Sunday.

In spite, though, of all the light on the subject, there is scant hope that these perverters will stop arguing themselves out of the Sabbath blessing!

Tragedy indeed that they will not open their eyes to see that the Bible makes unmistakably clear that they misinterpret the heart of the earth, that Jesus by it did not mean the grave, that He was not three days and three nights in the grave, also that His trials crucifixion, and burial consumed more than one day.  They seem bewitchedly oblivious that the Book records the hour of each event, as follows: (a) at about the sixth hour (either noon or midnight according to ancient time-keeping -- sunset at the twelfth hour), Jesus was in Pilate's Judgment Hall (John 19:14); (b) at the third hour He was nailed to the cross (Mark 15:25); (c) at the succeeding "sixth hour," the hour while He hung upon the cross darkness covered the earth (Mark 15:33); (d) at the "ninth hour" He died (Mark 15:37); and (e) at about the twelfth hour, just before sunset, He was buried (Mark 15:42-46).  Now consider the Inspired record (1) that from the first sixth hour to the second sixth hour there are twelve hours; (2) that from the second sixth hour to the twelfth hour (sunset) there are an additional six hours; (3) that there is only one sixth hour (noon) during the light part of the day and one sixth hour (midnight)

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       24

during the dark part of the day, (4) that it was at the sixth hour during the light part of the day that darkness covered the earth while Jesus was hanging on the cross (Matt. 27:45), (5) and that since the sixth hour in which He was led into Pilate's Judgment Hall was before the crucifixion, then it inescapably follows that the sixth hour before the crucifixion was either Thursday noon or midnight the sixth hour in the night between Thursday sunset and  Friday sunrise.  Why could they have brought Him to Pilate by night?  For the same reason that they had Him arrested and brought to Annas and Caiaphas by night -- that is, because they feared the people, for many believed in Him, and they wanted therefore to keep quiet their dark work, so as not to create commotion or opposition.

The fact that Jesus' captors first led Him to Annas (John 18:13-24), where they awaited the coming of day for His legal trial before the Sanhedrin (which preceded His trail before Pilate), is inescapable proof that the time which elapsed from the Sanhedrin trial to the burial, was from early morning, Thursday the fifteenth, to about sunset the next day Friday the sixteenth, a total of thirty-six hours.  And since the hours from His burial about sunset Friday, to His resurrection about sunrise Sunday, make a total of another thirty-six hours, then the grand total of hours in which He was in the custody of the Sanhedrin is 72 -- exactly three

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       25

days and three nights.

This is the Bible's own hour-by-hour record of the time of these events, and in perfect accord with it is the traditional and historical  celebration of the same events.  Since the chronicled hours, from Jesus' arrest and trial to His resurrection, bear indisputable record of a total 72 hours, and since those who buried Him returned home and kept the Sabbath according to the commandment (Luke 23:56), and also since we are told that He arose on the first day of the week, Sunday (John 20:1-8; Luke 24:1-7; Mark 16:1-6), there is therefore  no slightest Bible justification for anyone's concluding wrongly concerning the day and the hour of each event and the total hours consumed.  Finally, since only the Bible tells the exact and whole truth, then any voice to the contrary is that of the Deceived, the Devil, plotting to discredit the Bible and to trap someone somewhere.

As the time thus consumed in this sequence of events (from the time Christ appeared before Annas to the time He arose from the dead) is absolutely Biblical, aggregating as predicted exactly three full days and three full nights, then there is no Scripturally and logically admissible conclusion other than that Christ definitely did not intend His utterance, "three days and three nights in the heart of the earth," to mean merely from the time He was to be put

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       26

into the grave to the time He was to arise from it.  Rather, He meant from the time the Sanhedrin was to take Him into custody, to the time the stone was to roll away from the tomb in order for Him to arise therefrom (Luke 24:7).  Moreover, since the Sanhedrin was the headquarters, the heart of the church, thus the heart of the earth in its time, and since Christ was in its custody three days and three nights (for the Sanhedrin set a watch over His body even while It rested in the tomb), then the Sanhedrin, the church, is what He termed "the heart of the earth."  And who can honestly deny the correctness of the figure, considering that, as the Scriptures teach, the earth still stands only because the church, the heart of the earth (the transmitter  of spiritual life), is still functioning in an effort to impart eternal life to it?

The church (with Christ in it), not the grave, is in every spiritual sense the heart and the life of the earth.  Indeed, no understanding mind could ever regard the grave to be "the heart of the earth", much less, then, could the Lord so regard it.  The enlightened mind well knows, too, that the grave is not the generator of life, but the container of death, and therefore can never be called the heart of the earth, no, no more than can a man's carcass be called his soul.

Since Jonah's ordeal is a type of Christ's ordeal, we shall now look unto it. The whale,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       27

being a living creature that safely transported Jonah's life through the deep, must be figurative of something living, not of a grave, an inanimate thing, that itself is figurative of eternal hell!  What, then, could the whale possibly be figurative but of the old ship Zion on voyage over the savage sea of sin, to the City Eternal!  O, how plain, how sure, how stirring!

The whale's failing to do away with Jonah, but rather taking him safely to shore so that Nineveh perish not, typifies the Satan-dominated Sanhedrin's failing to do away with Jesus, though fulfilling the prophecies "that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not!"  John 11:50.  And just as Providence permitted the ship's crew to plunge Jonah into the sea for the sake of the ship's safety and for their own lives' sake, as well as for the sake of Nineveh, so Providence permitted the mob to take Christ and to nail Him to the cross for the sake of His church and her captive members, as well as for the sake of the lost world.

Here also is seen the fact that as the ship and its crew would never have survived the storm, nor Nineveh the judgment that was about to befall her, save by Jonah's ordeal in and survival of the briny deep, in like manner the church and the world would never have escaped Satan's hold upon them, save by Christ's voluntary sufferings and by His  triumphant

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       28

Since in the belly of a hunger-stricken whale God safely carried Jonah through the depths of a stormy sea, and since in the hands of a blood-thirsty church He safely bore Christ through the depths of sin itself, thus even so today will He safely bear through the depths of hypocrisy, ism-corrupt Christianity, and pleasure-loving society, every one who does as did both Jonah and Christ.  God will do as much for all today, even though they be in the grip of a money-mad, prophet-hating,  and self-satisfied (lukewarm) ministry.  Yes,  He will safely transport all such to the shores of Mount Zion, there to stand with the Lamb.  However, those who do follow the example of Jonah and of Christ, will for certain find themselves among the "outcasts" for Truth's sake.  But thanks be to God that no one,  priest or prelate, can deprive them of feasting on meat in due season, on timely truth, especially adapted to meet their particular needs.  Thus all who awake to their Laodiceanism, and to their duty to proclaim God's Truth for this time regardless of consequences, will triumphantly and jubilantly land on the shores of eternity!

And so it is that Jonah's voluntarily allowing himself to be plunged into the fiercest of sea tempests for the sake of the ship and its crew, and thus for Nineveh is the type; and that Christ's voluntarily permitting Himself

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       29

to be plunged into the fiercest of sin tempests, there to be mocked, nailed to a cross and put  into a tomb, for the sake of the Church and  the captive members, and thus for the world,  is the antitype.

Christ's descending to earth to save its inhabitants at a time when Satan had taken complete control not only of the world but of the Church too, and thus expected therein to forever make rid of the only Saviour as soon as He should appear; also Christ's breaking through Satan's defense lines, re-establishing His Church communication lines the world over for His people to come in, is His glorious victory.

These are the lessons which the Lord wanted to convey to the Jews through the Jonah-whale allegory, and these are the lessons which He especially wants to convey to us.  The theory, though, of three days and three nights in the grave brings no lesson of any kind, to any one.

It is now clearly seen, too, that to construe Christ's statement, "three days and three nights in the heart of the earth," to mean His going into the grave, is calculated not only to do away with the Holy Sabbath but also to exclude the significance of His trials and  sufferings, to cover up the lesson which the Inspired figure, "the heart of the earth," teaches.

Thus the frail and flimsy pebble structure

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       30

of the Friday-sabbath builder batter itself to pieces against the immovable foregoing concrete facts.  Even with employing his own distorting way of figuring, he fails to get a Friday for the Sabbath.  Where he really gets Friday instead of Saturday for the Sabbath, is in the following two paragraphs that are absolutely of his own  fabrication.

"This new moon showing the first day of the first year of the cycle always comes in on the day which the Roman calendar calls Wednesday.  Actually God's day begins on the previous evening (i.e. Tuesday evening Roman time) according to scripture. Gen. 1:23.

"Since Wednesday is the day of the new moon, and the new moon comes on the 5th day of God's week, then we can safely say that the 6th day falls on Thursday and the 7th day Sabbath  of God's Week is called Friday, Roman Time."  God's Calendar, p. 7.

Though these statements may sound impressive, their substance is the stuff of tinsel.  The new moon of the first day of the first year in the three-year cycle does not always come on Wednesday as he says it does.  The World Almanac reveals that over a period of 25 years, only three times did a new moon fall on Wednesday in the month of March (the season of the three-year cycle) -- (1) 1928, March 21; (2) 1948, March 10; and (3) 1951, March 7.  The moon does not follow in any month of any

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       31

year the pattern he fancies it follows.

With the subject in question now alight like "the burning bush," it is our devout hope that both the author of the Friday-sabbath doctrine  and the victims of it will readily see that a Friday-sabbath is just one more case of ism-sprout now at the eleventh hour, just one more Enemy endeavor to draw minds away from the Lord's saving message, and to confuse, confound, and disgust both believers and prospective students of the Bible.  It is therefore our earnest prayer that the author of the Friday sabbath, along with his victims, will now rejoice that the Spirit of God has again reproved error and caused Truth to shine forth brighter than ever; not simply exposing just another false theory, but actually doing away with another Enemy attempt again to "take away the Daily," and again to put in its place an "abomination that maketh desolate" (Dan. 11:31); this time not by  endeavoring to set up anew the day of Romanism, but actually to foster the day of Mohammedanism!

May you, Brethren, who have been trapped by the Friday-sabbath ism, now rejoice from the depths of your souls that "the Spirit of Truth" has made possible your escape from the Enemy's stronghold.  May you not for even one fleeting moment delay your flight from it, lest you frustrate the grace of God.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       32

You now see, I am sure, that the so-called "Key to God's Week," instead of being the key by which to unlock proof that Friday is the Sabbath is actually the key by which to lock up the error and set its captives free.

Since through the Rod (Mic. 6:9; 7:14),  Inspiration has at this very time amassed unparalleled prophetic proof of the onrushing approach of "the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Mal. 4:5), what, then, could be more inevitable and more certain than that Satan would unleash upon Christendom his most vicious pack of Bible perversions?  It is therefore not surprising to hear the loud barking of "greedy dogs,...shepherds that cannot understand" (Isa. 56:11), endeavoring to draw away attention from the most weighty concern ever to confront mankind -- the all-consequential truth that "the great day of  the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly." Zeph. 1:14.

Because the momentous message in connection with the day of the Lord (Mal. 4:5, 6), is to lift aloft "the law of Moses" which God "commanded unto him in Horeb" (verse 4 -- the law of the Decalogue, Ex. 20:3-17), and thus proclaim the Sabbath (the heart of the law) "more fully," Satan in his Preacher's garb is spawning a new batch of false Sabbath theories with which to confound the Truth

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 5, 6                       33

if possible.  But the Spirit of God works, too revealing Truth to expose falsehood, so as to safeguard the faithful who want to know the truth at any price, and who want to obey It regardless of consequences.

In the next issue of the Code, there will  appear two questions and their answers.  One question will pertain to Sabbath observance at the International Date Line; the other will pertain to the question of whether the Sabbath is governed by the lunar month or by a independent weekly cycle.

"I have read Pastor N's book," writes another Truth-seeker, "and as a result I have become confused about Sabbath-keeping in Australia, and do not know how to deal with the proposed

With all respect to everyone's religious beliefs, it must be recognized that Pastor N's contention that Sunday is the true Sabbath in Australia, although Saturday in America, is as true as to declare that the year 1952 in  Australia is 1951 in America.  He so confounds knowledge with words as to create an illusion of truth.  But an illusion, a mere mirage, is all it is.  His theory that one's cruising the earth westward would lose him a day in time while his cruising eastward would gain him a day, logically constrains the false conclusion the one's flying at the same rate of speed as that at which the earth revolves on her axis, practically 1000 miles per hour, would lose him as many days, weeks, months and years as he should keep on flying.  For at that rate of speed he would keep up with the sun, and,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       3

unless he should stop, he would never see the end of the day if he should start out in the daytime, or would never see the end of the night if he should start out at nighttime.

Then, too, N's proposed location of an International date line in Eden (Palestine, or thereabouts), instead of the natural one in the Pacific Ocean, is obviously illogical and impracticable besides un-Biblical when one considers that in the beginning Eden was God's center of habitation, also His workshop of creation; and that as soon as the sun was created it first flashed its morning glory in Eden, and at the same time cast its shadows over the Pacific Ocean.

When Pastor N. takes all these facts into consideration, then, he, too, will know that just as Eden saw the first sunrise (the beginning of the first solar daylight -- "the  morning"), so the Pacific Ocean, east of Australia saw the first sunset (the beginning of the first solar night -- "the evening"), and that then and there ended pre-solar time, the third day, and began solar time, the fourth day.  And that is why the solar day still begins and ends respectively in the same places.  He will then discover that this creative act of God is what established the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean, and will then know why men, inspired with Divine thought and reason, recognized it to be there.  When all these natural causes are taken into account then it is seen that the first Sabbath,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       4

the seventh day, began in Eden (Jerusalem) as the sun there sank out of sight about ten hours after the third sunset occurred at the Date Line in the Pacific ocean.

Moreover, the fact that N's Eden date line would have to pass through densely inhabited areas, whereas God's date line in the Pacific passes through no habitation at all, is another good and sufficient evidence that the date line in the Pacific is God's created date line.  The difference which an Eden (Palestine) date line would make is this: Momentarily Pastor N could step aside from where Saturday commences and could spend a day on the side where Sunday begins.  Thus his Eden date line would enable him entirely to avoid Saturday Sabbath-keeping, and would thus easily afford him a day's fun, or a day's work, on the side of the line where Sunday would be, while his wife and children at home, only across the street, on the side where Saturday would be, keep Saturday Sabbath.  And so by his way of reasoning,  he could, while in Australia, keep Sunday sabbath with the rest of the world, and expect credit for keeping Saturday Sabbath!  A wonderful scheme indeed!  Think, though, of the results: on one side of Eden's date-line street, the people would be dancing, hammering, chiseling, and bargaining, while on the other side of the street the people would be keeping Sabbath, praying, and preaching!   What a Babel that would be!

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       5

Thus we see that sharp minds, destitute of the Spirit of Truth, can devise sharp schemes but likewise Spiritless.  But thanks be to God, they are not able to put over all schemes they launch.  Marvelous indeed that Pastor N discovered the Palestine or Eden date line, and neither Christ the Creator, nor His holy prophets ever knew a thing about it!  O, the wonderful spiritless wisdom of Spiritless men!

Pastor N's computation may, depending on the speed at which he travels, lose him a day or days if he goes westward, or gain him a day or days if he goes eastward whereas God's week and His Sabbath are invariably constant, never losing or gaining, regardless what direction one travels.

It is simple to see that in cruising the earth either westward or eastward we either lose or gain time on the timepiece, not because of the Date line, nor because of time itself, but simply because of our going either in the opposite direction from which the earth revolves -- westward -- or in our going in the direction in which the earth revolves -- eastward.

A comparison may bring this fact clearer.  Picture your climbing a hill of sand over which for every yard you move upward, your feet slide back an inch, your efforts thus resulting in your losing one yard in every 36 yards of climbing.  Actually therefore you would be walking 37 yards but moving up only 36 yards.  Whereas in going  downhill, your feet would,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       6

on the contrary, slide ahead an inch for every yard you walked, your efforts thus resulting in your gaining one yard in every 35 yards or 36 yards for only 35 yards walked.

So it is that in cruising westward, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, you would have to set back your timepiece four times (4 hours) in order to keep the same time as do the people where you would find yourself.  And in cruising eastward from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, you would have to push ahead your timepiece four times (4 hours).

Let us suppose again that you reside where the evening star stands (let it be stationary for our purpose here) directly overhead at the time the sun goes down -- at 6:00 P.M.  One day you set out upon a voyage, starting at 6:00 P.M., and cruising westward at the rate of 1000 miles a day.  Accordingly, the day after you leave home, the earth brings you around again directly under the evening star, but one hour later -- at 7:00 P.M.  And since the time in that locality is 6:00 P.M., you move your timepiece back an hour -- back to 6:00.  Each day for twenty-four days you repeat the performance, until at the end of the 24th day you finally arrive home again.  By that time you have set back your timepiece 24 times, an hour each time.  Shall we now say you have lost a day on the 24,000 mile trip?  Certainly not.  You have lost nothing, not even a minute, and you have lived precisely as long as if you had been home, and no longer.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       7

"But how," it may be asked, "could one on the Sabbath sail westward from the western (American) side to the eastern side to the eastern (Asiatic) side without ending his Sabbath-keeping as soon as he crossed the date-line and there run into Sunday, perhaps only an hour after he began to keep Sabbath?  Would he be justified in keeping only a part of the Sabbath?"

Let us suppose that not only one but all the passengers, including the crew, are Sabbath-keepers.  In that event all of them would certainly heed the Commandment and cease from labor by anchoring right where Sabbath overtook them.  From this Biblically correct principle of Sabbath-keeping, follows the logic that when beyond all control of his, a voyaging Sabbath-keeper sails over the date line on the Sabbath, he will still continue to keep holy the full hours of It, just the same as if the ship had anchored right where the Sabbath overtook it.  Then when the holy hours are passed, where the Sabbath overtook him, he will proceed to keep time according to  the day and hour of the land in which he finds himself.

All these considerations translate themselves into absolute proof that the Sabbath necessarily begins on Friday at sunset, but about eight hours earlier in Australia then in Jerusalem.  The simple, never-changing Truth is that God requires us to keep holy the seventh day of the week, the Sabbath, whenever and wherever the sun brings It to us, and that is

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       8

why He emphatically commands us to keep It holy from "even to even." Lev. 23:32.

We now turn our attention to another Sabbath theory and ism, concerning which another Truth-seeker writes: "A brochure entitled The Bible Sabbath in God's Perfect Plan of Redemption contends that the Sabbath is governed by the lunar month, not by an independent weekly cycle.  Please give me your answer from the Bible."

Assuming that the seventh-day Sabbath is governed by a lunar calendar, instead of by the independent weekly cycle,

"Yes, all Christendom, with the exception of some Saturday keepers, keep a heathen day of the Sun.  But the Saturday keepers also keep, and honor a day of heathen origin -- the day of Saturn....

"Exodus 12:1, 2: 'And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month [moon] of the year to you.'  The moon was made to measure the months.  Compare 1 Samuel 20, verses 5, 18,  24, 27, 34.  And also to mark the seasons

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       9

(Gen. 1:14 and Psa. 104:19).  The moon and the sun and the stars is God's calendar in the firmament that all men can see and mark God's times together with the earth....

"The Sabbath of the Bible, therefore, is the Sabbath upon which the Passover comes every year.  The Lord has purposely placed the Passover celebration upon the second Sabbath of the first Moon (Abib), every year, for a reminder of the Sabbath every year (Ex. 20:8).  It is the second Sabbath of the first month, by reason of the Passover being upon the fourteenth of that month, which is the first full moon after the Vernal equinox when spring begins." -- The Bible Sabbath in God's Perfect Plan of Redemption, pp. 9, 13, 16.

To the exponents of the aforequoted Sabbath  reckoning

In the preceding quoted paragraphs, the well-intentioned but grossly misinformed author is attempting to overthrow the seventh-day Sabbath by ignoring the original weekly cycle, God's septenary cycle of creation, and by setting up in its place a moon-controlled septenary cycle of his own devising, so as to make the seventh,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       10

the fourteenth, the twenty-first, and the twenty-eighth days of each lunar month commemorative Sabbaths of the week of creation.

It is true that the names of the months and the days of the week are of mythological origin, but the cycle of the week, as we shall see is from time immemorial.  True, the Lord said to Moses, "This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you." Ex. 12:2.  But He did not say, It shall also be the beginning of weeks to you.  Thus the question, "How readest thou?"  sharply confronts the lunar-Sabbath author for answer.  Plainly God could not have said, "this moon shall be the beginning of weeks to you," for such a course would be as we shall see, contrary to Nature, Scripture, and Logic.

Had He intended the moon to fix the time of the holy Sabbath, He would have made it complete its revolution around the earth once either in exactly four weeks or in exactly one week.  But since the moon does not do so, it cannot be taken as the Divine regulator of the weekly holy Sabbath day.  Moreover, Sabbath begins at "even," whereas the new moon may appear at any hour of day or night.

The following paragraphs briefly bring forth solar, lunar, and Biblical facts, not implications, that the weekly cycle never has been and never can be controlled by any lunar or solar calendar, and that the church under God's

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       11

direction has never either in the Old or in the New Testament kept a lunar Sabbath.

The Sabbath which the Lord hallowed was celebrated on exactly the seventh day after the creation of the earth began, not on the seventh day after the creation of the moon began (Gen. 2:2).  So the weekly cycle which God set in motion, and the Sabbath which He Himself celebrated, were not measured by the revolutions of the moon, but by the revolutions of the earth.  Had the Lord blessed and observed a Sabbath that is governed by the moon, then the Sabbath hours could not have fallen on the seventh day from the beginning of creation, but rather must have fallen within the tenth day, for the moon was not created and set in motion until after the fourth day of creation. (See Genesis 1:14-19).  Since the week was not then governed by the moon, it certainly cannot be governed by it now and still be the week of creation.

As creation week was three days older than both the sun and the moon, the fact conclusively follows, therefore, that neither of these heavenly luminaries could have ever regulated the week of creation. Moreover, such a solar-lunar regulatory force would, except it be in cycles of tens, deprive Time and Creation of the first three days, leaving them as a phantom "lost period."

Furthermore, were we to standardize the seventh, the fourteenth, the twenty-first, and

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       12

the twenty-eighth days of the lunar month for the observance of the Sabbath, as the booklet advocates, we could not keep up with the moon anyway, for the lunar month is not actually four weeks (28 days) long, but approximately twenty-nine and a half days.

All these significant facts completely invalidate the idea of the weeks being dependent upon the monthly orbit of the moon, and should therefore render unnecessary any further discussion of  the subject.  But since the lunar-sabbath author claims that history supports his contention, we shall therefore quote the following three paragraphs:

"The use of the week was introduced into the Roman Empire about the 1st or 2nd century of the Christian era from Egypt, and had been recognized independently of Christianity before the Emperor Constantine confirmed it by enjoining the observance of the Christian  Sabbath.  With the Mohammedans the week has also a religious character, Friday being observed by them as a Sabbath." -- Twentieth Century Cyclopaedia, Vol. 8, p. 487

"The period of seven days...was used by the Brahmins in India with the same denominations employed by us, and was alike found in the calendars of the Jews, Egyptians, Arabs and Assyrians." -- Standard Dictionary, definition "Calendar."

"The week is a period of seven days, having

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 7, 8                       13

no reference whatever to the celestial motions, -- a circumstance to which it owes its unalterable uniformity.  It was employed from time immemorial in almost all eastern countries; and, as it forms neither an aliquot part of the year nor of the lunar month, those who reject the Mosaic recital will be at a loss, as Dalambre remarks, to assign it to an origin  having such semblance of possibility." -- Encyclopedia Britannica.

There is history's testimony.  Plainly, it no more supports the lunar-sabbath author's claims than do logic and Scripture.  On the contrary, it reveals that the present Roman week is the same as the ancient Jewish and Christian week, that it has been and still is the world's week "from time immemorial" -- from creation.  The week, moreover, explains Encyclopedia Brittanica, "is a period of seven days having no reference whatsoever to the celestial motions."

(Cont.) Part 3

As for a lunar calendar, let us not lose sight of the fact that Moses and the people that he led out of Egypt were all born and raised in Egypt; that they knew of no other than the Egyptian calendar.  And what was it? -- History gives the answer in the following paragraphs:

"We know from the Latin writer Censorinus that the first day of the Egyptian calendar year coincided with the rising of Sothis in A.D. 139 and it must therefore have done the same thing 1460 solar years earlier and so on, i.e. in 1321 B.C., 2781 B.C., 4241 B.C., 5701 B.C. etc. ...Egyptologists consequently date the introduction of the calendar to 4241 B.C. or to 2781 B.C. according as they believe the Pyramids to be earlier or later than the latter date.  A still higher date, e.g., 5701 B.C., is hardly likely.

"...Twelve nominal months of 30 days each gave 360 days, and the missing 5 days were added on at the end under the name of  'days additional to the year.'  The months were

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       3

grouped into three sets of four, the first four forming the inundation season, the second four the winter or sowing-time and the third four the summer or harvest." -- Encylopedia Britannica, 1950 edition, Vol. 4, pp. 576, 575. Subject: Calendar, -- Egyptian.

While history points out that the Egyptian month consisted of thirty days, Moses reveals in his writings that the Noatic month likewise was thirty days long. (See Gen. 7:11 and 8:3, 4).  The only change God made in the Egyptian calendar was: "This month [Abib] shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you." Ex. 12:1, 2.

Since Moses and the people whom he led out knew of no other than the Noatic and Egyptian calendars, and since God corrected only the time in which the year was to begin, He thus revealed that, aside from the time in which the new year was to commence Egypt's measuring time was to be theirs too.  He even approved of the Egyptian names of the months as it is seen from the fact that "the month Abib" (Egypt's name of the month), the day it began and the day it ended), was chosen to be their first month of the year (Ex. 12:2; 13:4).  Moreover, the Jews also used in their calendar the Medo-Persian or Babylonian months in place of the Hebrew numbers of the  months.  The Medo-Persian Nisan (Egypt's Abib) the Jews took for their year's first month, Iyar

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       4

for the second, Sivan for the third, and so on four of which are recorded in the Bible.  They are: Abib (Ex. 13:4), Zif (1 Kings 6:1), Ethanim (1 Kings 8:2), Bul (1 Kings 6:38).  The Jews could not have used the Egyptian and the Medo-Persian names of the months interchangeably if the months were not parallel with the Hebrew months.  Furthermore, we have already seen from history's record, too, that Egypt's week was the same as the Hebrew week.  This being so, the Lord said nothing about the week or the month.

Still further, the calendar which the prophets used in both the Old and New Testaments was not lunar, but solar: For example, in Noah's time 150 days equaled five months, 30 days to a month, (Gen. 7:11; 8:3,4).  In Daniel 7:25 and 12:7, also in Revelation 12:14, "time times, and the dividing of time," -- three and a half years -- are interpreted in Revelation 12:6, and 13:5 to be 1260 days, or 42 months, thirty days to a month.  Heaven's way of measuring time is, therefore, not lunar, but solar.

When God created the moon He appointed it to rule the night (Gen. 1:14-18), not the day.  Not the moon alone, therefore, but both the sun and the moon jointly He appointed "for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years." Gen. 1:14.

It is in 1 Samuel 20:5, in King Saul's day

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       5

that the Bible first mentions celebrating new-moon-days and it is perhaps the only Bible statement upon which the lunar-time theorists have based their faith in lunar calendars.

Celebrating a new-moon-day does not prove that the months began with the new moon.  Moreover, if they had to celebrate the day on which the month began, then why not cerebrate the day on which the week began, and also the day on which the year began?

Some take 1 Samuel 20:27 as proof that the months began with each new moon, but when one stops and thinks, he discovers that if the months had begun with the celebration of the new-moon-days, then it would have been needless for King Saul to point out that a day after the celebration was the second day of the month; such a statement would indeed have been superfluous if the celebration was invariably followed by the second day of the month.  The Scripture, therefore, rather than proving that the months began with a new moon, it proves that they did not, but that it so happened that in that particular year the day after the celebration was the second day of the month.  This is what the Scripture actually points out and nothing more.

Bible commentators generally hold that sometime after the Hebrews went out of Egypt they began to use lunar time, but no one knows

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       6

exactly when and by whom it was commanded.  Suppose it is true that the Jews kept lunar time.  It is no sign that we should follow their un-Biblical example, for their constant insubordination caused them to do many things which they had no business doing.

Finally, since Moses and the prophets after him are entirely silent about a lunar calendar,  then why should we to our own damnation add strange sparks, sparks of our own devising, to the light of God?

"Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine." Job 18:5.  "Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of His servant that walketh in darkness, and hath no light?  let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled.  This shall ye have of Mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow." Isa. 50:10, 11.

Since this is the only light which the Bible sheds on the subject, the lunar calendar theory, therefore, appears to be only conjectural, and  not at all Biblical.  Consequently, "it is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord" (Lam. 3:26), not to run ahead of Him.  We can thus avoid presenting

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       7

strange fires before Him.  Nadab and Abihu were unmindful of God's command not to meddle with His statutes, "and there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them,..." -- Lev. 10:1, 2.  "Be not," therefore, "carried about with divers and strange [un-Biblical] doctrines." Heb. 13:9.

Take your hands off the ark of God; the ark is to be supported by only Him Who knows how, when, and by Whom.

And now we come to still another ism, to the illusion of a

There is no more fantastic a Sabbath theory than that which holds its victims captive in the belief that the Sabbath is 1,000 years long, erecting its wildly fanciful claims upon the bald assumption that the seven days of creation were each a period of 1,000 years! Absurd as  the theory is, yet it goes on and on, when but scarcely more than a glance through the record of creation is needed to convince any objective reader that those days of creation were 24 hours long.  The record, "And the evening and the morning were the first day" (Gen. 1:5), dissipates any possibility other than that the day was in two parts -- one part dark (night), the other part light (day).  And since the same statement, "the evening and

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       8

the morning," was repeated with each succeeding day of creation, Inspiration thereby definitely certifies that each day in the week of creation was 24 hours long -- twelve hours of night and twelve hours of day (John 11:9).

If these seventh-day Sabbath evaders believe what the Bible teaches, then why do they not ask themselves what "the evening and the morning" would be other than a night and a day -- 24 hours?  Would they dare tell us that the night and the day were each 500 years long!  If so, then how did vegetation and animal life thrive or even survive 500 years at a time without sunshine and heat, and 500 years at a time without rest from the blazing light and heat of the sun?  Moreover, if such were the case then, why is it not such now?  Who recreated time and conditions?

As this theory is wholly contrary to Scripture, the Devil has therefore of necessity put his hammer of pseudo science into the hands of this particular class of Sabbath dodgers to help them drive their canopy stakes into falsehood.  For he well knows that all evaders of Truth prefer to place greater confidence in so-called learned men than in the Spirit of God Who Himself was present at creation and by Whom "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Peter 1:21.

  But do these millennium-long-sabbath

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       9

theorists appeal to no Bible at all in support of their way of reasoning?  O, yes!  They, too, have their Bible test, and here it is:

"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one  day." 2 Pet. 3:8.

They construe this scripture as proof that where the Bible says a day It means a thousand years, and that therefore each of the seven days of creation were of a thousand years duration, and the complete work of creation seven millenniums long!  last of which is  supposed to have been the seventh millennium, the Sabbath.

What!  Do they mean to say that the Lord was 3,000 years in the heart of the earth instead of three days and three nights (Matt. 12:40)?  Evidently according to their logic that is what they must say.

Now let us study this scripture to determine what it actually says and means.  Note that it does not say that a day is one thousand years, but rather that a day is "as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day."   Plainly, it does not either say or mean that one day is a thousand years long -- no, not any more than it says or means that, conversely, one thousand years are one day long.  It in no wise says or means either the one or the other,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 9, 10                       10

but is simply illustrating that with eternal God one thousand years are as short a period of  time as is one day with us mortals.  Why is this illustration used?  Because scoffers were to arise saying: "...Where is the promise of His coming?  for since the fathers fell asleep, all things  continue as they were from the beginning of the creation" (2 Peter 3:4) and still He has not come.  Over against this short-sighted reasoning by earth-bound mortals, the Divine comparison in the illustration in question underwrites God's promises as timeless, as immutable, and as sure as God Himself.  The great lesson which the illustration teaches is that with Him time does not mean what it does to us mortal men who come and go "as a shadow that passeth away" (Ps. 144:4) and "as a tale that is told." -- (Ps. 90:9).

Inspiration thus reveals that Sabbath-evasion victims who continue in their plight after having been shown the truth of the Sabbath are either unsound or insincere, or both.

The fact is now fully evidenced that Satan has something to suit the taste of everyone who does not himself dig down deep into the wells of salvation, does wickedly and does not believe exactly what the Bible says.

Part 4

"I wish," writes still another Truth-seeker, "you could help me see for sure from the Bible that Sabbath falls on Saturday, and that Christians are required to keep It instead of Sunday."

Every Bible student knows that the seventh day of the week is the Sabbath; that It alone is holy, and commemorative of God's creation (Gen. 2:3).  Then, too, the whole civilized world knows that Sunday is the first day of the week, and not a few know that it was originally a pagan festal day in honor of the mythical god of the sun.  The fact thus follows that the day preceding it, Saturday, is the seventh day -- the holy Sabbath of creation.  Besides, every honest Bible student knows that the Bible neither in the Old nor in the New Testament teaches any Sabbath other than the seventh-day Sabbath.

It must also be remembered that the only part of the Bible that God ever wrote with His own fingers is the ten-commandment law of which the Sabbath is a part (Ex. 31:18).  In fact, He Himself not only personally wrote the

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       3

Decalogue but also personally came down to deliver It to mankind amid the most awful, awesome, and solemn demonstration of all time. (See Exodus 19 and 20.)  Think of it!  God in person descended to the top of Mount Sinai, spoke the ten precepts of the law, and "ADDED NO MORE." Deut. 5:22.

Who can with eyes and ears opened whole-heartedly turn away from this strictly Heavenly thunder-and-fire-attested, stone-preserved Truth of the Scriptures?  Surely you will most seriously consider to what purpose and of what worth are you making to yourself the Lord's special and most celebrated commemorative visitation, solemnizing the giving of His ten Heaven-born precepts of justice and peace, and happiness for all mankind -- the world's oldest, yet greatest, of all documents.  What mad folly, indeed, that would do away with It?  Has it ever occurred to you that to disregard His own personal handiwork in the Scriptures, is manifestly a thousand times worse than to disregard all the work that was done by the hands of all the prophets and all the apostles?  Any wonder, then, that the Devil is working with such hatred and such wrath against it?

In this day of increased knowledge, all this adds up to the stark reality that to attempt to set up another day for the Sabbath is in itself supreme idolatry, blasphemy, and contempt directly against the Most Holy Himself.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       4

In view of these awful considerations of Truth, no better off are those who declare Sabbath to be for the Jew only.  They seem utterly to scorn the simple fact that there was no Jew when God created and Himself set the example of Sabbath keeping.  The Saviour, too, declared that "the Sabbath was made for man"  (Mark 2:27) -- not merely for the Jew, but for all mankind.

Furthermore, just as God commanded the Jews to keep the Sabbath holy, so He likewise commanded the Gentile, saying:

"Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for My salvation is near to come, and My righteousness to be revealed.  Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting It, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.  Neither let the son of the stranger [the Gentile], that hath joined himself to the Lord, speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly separated me from His people: neither let the eunuch [Gentile] say, Behold I am a dry tree.  For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep My Sabbaths, and choose the things that please Me, and take hold of My covenant; even unto them will I give in Mine house and within My walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.  Also the sons of the stranger [Gentile], that

join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one [Jew or Gentile] that keepeth the  Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; even them will I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon Mine altar; for Mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.  The Lord God, which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather  others to Him, beside those that are gathered  unto Him." Isa. 56:1-8.

And if it must still be argued that the Sabbath is only for the Jews, then so much the more that It must also be for the Christians, because a "born again" (John 3:3) Gentile is no longer a Gentile.  His second birth, says the scripture, has caused him to become a Jew, "for...if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Gal. 3:28, 29).

Having thus been cut off from the "wild" (Gentile) olive tree, and having thus been grafted to the "good" (Jewish) olive tree, such a one has become a member of the Jewish eternal family tree, says Romans 11:24; and Christ reaffirms that "Salvation is of the Jews" (John 4:22), and that "unto him [Judah] shall the gathering of the people be." Gen. 49:10.

So it is that the Kingdom of Christ is made

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       6

up of Spirit-born Jews only.  Even the name of the eternal capital city -- new Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2) -- is compounded of the words Jew-risalem -- Jewish-peace.  It, too, therefore, loudly declares that Christ's Kingdom is a Kingdom made up for and of spiritual Jews only.

Moreover, the founders of the Christian church were all Jews by blood.  And the thousands of converts that were added to the church on and after the Pentecost -- during the first three and one-half years -- were also all full-blooded Jews, but as they no longer called themselves Jews, but Christians instead (Acts 11:26), they all lost their national identity.  So they, and also their brethren, -- the kingdoms of Judah and Israel -- who were dispersed throughout the world were, with the exception of a few Jews, assimilated by the nations, and thus down through the centuries all lost their national and racial identity. (Hos. 3:5).  This being so, no Christian and no so-called Gentile really knows for sure whether he is a descendant  of the Hebrew tree or of the Gentile tree.  God only knows.

Though we are plainly told that the 144,000 guileless servants of God, the first fruits are made up of the twelve tribes of Israel -- first Jacobites after the flesh and second born of the Spirit (Rev. 7:4-8), and that the innumerable great multitude, the second fruits, are made up of all nations (Rev. 7:9) first of both Gentiles and Jews born after the flesh, and

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       7

second birth after the Spirit, yet God can and will identify them all: "I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know Me:" says the Lord, "behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.  And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her." Ps. 87:4, 5.

Thus it is that all through the prophecies which point to this day and age God addresses the church not as Christian or as Gentile, but as Judah, Israel, Zion, Jerusalem and so on.  Furthermore, all the covenants and all the promises are made to the descendants of Jacob.  Aside from a privilege to join the Jews -- the church -- there is not one promise made to the Gentiles.  When a Gentile, therefore, accepts Christ and joins His church, he then becomes  a Jew and thus subject to share in the promises to the Jews and to keep the Jewish Sabbath if  we must call It such.

You who want to be in Christ's Kingdom whether you be Jew or Gentile in the flesh had better now become full fledged Jews in the Spirit by accepting not only Christ, but also His Holy Sabbath, otherwise you shall certainly find yourselves outside of the City.  God forbid "For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie" (Rev. 22:15) -- all the unrepentant law-breakers since

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       8

the days of Cain.  It will be heart breaking and soul terrifying to find yourselves in a crowd that is doomed to suffer the second death -- eternal death.  "There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Matt. 24:51.

As we have now actually come to the time in which the church is to be purified and unified (the tares taken out of it and burned up), the House of God made white and clean, no unrepentant sinner left in it, God beforehand makes it known to His people.  "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets." Amos 3:7.  This is the very reason for which this and other companion publications are not announcing that the great and dreadful day of the Lord (the Judgment -- cleansing the temple of God -- Mal. 3:2, 3,  1 Pet. 4:17) is at hand, all of them crying out loud throughout Laodicea, saying:

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk [present Truth] without money and without price.  Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread [not inspired by the Spirit of God]?  and your labour for that which satisfieth not?  hearken diligently unto Me [to Inspiration], and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness." Isa. 55:1, 2.  (Your soul rather than your bones or flesh, denotes that the food that is offered free of

charge is spiritual, not physical.  The only literature of revealed Truth ever given away, given without money and without price by millions of copies world over, is this Rod literature.  Send your name for our mailing list.

"Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the  Almighty." Isa. 13:6.

"But who may abide the day of his coming?  and who shall stand when he appeareth?  for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' sope: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi [the ministry], and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness." Mal. 3:2, 3.

The scripture implies that their "offering" (labour) heretofore has not been in righteousness, but that after the cleansing it will be in  righteousness.  "...For there shall be no more any vain vision [false, uninspired] nor flattering divination [no bragging of spiritual achievements] within the house of Israel.  For I am the Lord: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord God." Ezek. 12:23-25 .

Let us now understandingly listen to God's

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       10

voice as He presently pleads through Isaiah's long concealed prophecies that are now unsealed for the first time and for our special good, saying:

"Awake, awake; put on thy strength [faith in the Word of God], O Zion [the rulers of the denomination]; put on thy beautiful garments,  O Jerusalem [the under rulers], the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean [the sinner be put away forever].  Shake thyself from the dust, arise, and sit down [on thy God-given throne], O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck O captive daughter of Zion." Isa. 52:1, 2.

"...the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners [the uncircumcised and the unclean] in the congregation of the  righteous." Ps. 1:5.

"And it shall come to pass that he that is left ['the remnant' -- after the sinners are 'cut off from among His people' in that day of cleansing; Judgment -- (Lev. 23:29)] in Zion, and he that remaineth [the 'remnant' derived by the cleansing] in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem.  [Thus shall it be] When the Lord shall have washed away [cleansed] the filth of the daughters of Zion [the Christian church, the mother of which was the ancient Jewish

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       11

church], and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.  And [after this purification takes place then it is that] the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.  And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain." Isa. 4:3-6.

Brethren, you cannot afford to miss this future glory now at the eleventh hour -- the last, the Judgment hour.

And as to those who are trying to make the world believe that Christ nailed the Ten Commandments to the cross of Calvary, they are either dishonest in what they say, or else are ignorant of what the Scriptures teach.  The Bible teaches that the law is "holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good" (Rom. 7:12); that sin is "the transgression of the Law" (1 John 3:4), that "the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23), and that men ought to repent of sinning -- repent of breaking the law -- so that Christ by His spilled blood might pay the penalty of their having sinned against the law, and thus make them free from the law.

Since the fundamental aim of Christ is to

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       12

impel men to repent of sinning, of breaking the law, thereby to lift them to the Divine level of morality and keep them free from sinning, it is as absurd as it is blasphemous to conclude that He could even breathe the thought of ever abrogating the law.  In fact had Christ destroyed the law, then from that moment onward there could never have been any more sin, and, therefore, never anything more to be forgiven of, and hence never need of Him any more!  If this be so, then what a supremely wicked Book the Bible, and what a supremely cruel Being, God!  And by contrast, what a hero Satan!  O the foolishness of men -- Blasphemy of blasphemies!  Truly, therefore, one would have to be another dolt indeed not to see that antinomianism in its every and its least expression is the most dread of Dragon-doctrine, and that it comes from carnal mind, for "the carnal mind is  enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Rom. 8:7.

Since in both Old and the New Testaments, the Bible still forbids (1) having other gods, (2) making images and bowing to them, (3) taking God's name in vain, (4) still demands children having respect for their parents, (5) still condemns killings, (6) committing adultery, (7) stealing, (8) lying, and since finally It still makes positive that (10) to break one of the commandments is to break all of

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       13

them (James 2:10), the conclusion is therefore sure and inescapable that all the ten commandments of the law are still in force, and that the Bible still demands our keeping them.

Who then could have done away with the law?  Certainly not the Lord, not the prophets, and not the apostles, for they all kept and taught the ten-commandment law, and all laid special emphasis on its immutability and therefore irrevocable validity.  Then what Dragon talk to say, "The moral law is done away"!  Who indeed could honestly look himself in the face while denying that all antinomian devisings are but rationalizing means for dodging Sabbath observance?  Of this be assured -- never will Heaven do away with the law which condemns sinning.  Only the foolish, the lawless, the crooked, the sin-loving think it out of the way.  But just let them be caught stealing or killing, and they will speedily find out then if they do not know now, that the law is still very much in force upon all, be they Jews or Gentiles, professors of religion or professors of atheism.  No wonder that these law-hating religionists, the so-called Christians of this day, have no better reputation in society and no better credit in the business world than do the non-Christians.  Wonder is that they have any standing at all!  What a pity their plight, and what a tragic  awakening will one day be theirs.

Let everyone know once for all that the

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       14

only law which God did do away with is the law of the sacrificial ordinances (Eph. 2:15; Col. 2:14; Heb. 7:18-25).  And He removed this law of sacrifices only because it, the shadow, the type, met its substance and its antitype in Christ's sacrifice of Himself for penitent sinners, and in His heavenly ministration for them, all in vicarious atonement for their sins -- in payment of the death penalty which the moral law imposed upon them for their having broken it.  Thus the typical sanctuary with its ceremonial services was, in effect,  transferred to the antitypical sanctuary in Heaven, where Christ our everlasting High Priest is now officiating, offering His Own blood, in our behalf.  Hence the typical sacrificial law is the only law that was ever removed from earth.

In Paul's time as now there were troublemakers over the law.  Especially troublesome were those who held to the rite of circumcision.  They had succeeded in confusing some of the  Galatians.  Whereupon Paul wrote to the  latter as follows: "O foolish Galatians, who  hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the Truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ  hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?  This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?  Are ye so foolish?  having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?...Stand fast therefore in the liberty

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       15

wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing....I would they were even cut off which trouble you." Gal. 3:1-3; 5:1, 2, 12.  The apostle Paul you readily note is against the law of circumcision -- the ceremonial law, not the moral law.

That in the foregoing words the Apostle is in no wise teaching the abrogation of the ten commandment law is made evident by His words in the following verses:

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings,  murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God." Gal. 5:19-21.

"(For not the hearers of the law [the ten  commandment law] are just before God but the doers of the law shall be justified)." Rom. 2:13.

Then Paul goes on to explain that no one is actually justified by the keeping of the law (the decalogue) itself, but that it points out the

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       16

sinner's transgression, pronounces his doom, then sends him condemned to Christ His Saviour Who alone, through the merits of His atoning blood which He shed in behalf of all sinners, can forgive him, justify him, then go on to sanctify him.  Thus the Apostle writes:

"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin [not the forgiveness  of it].  But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus....Do we then make void the law through faith?  God forbid: yea, we establish the law." Rom. 3:20-24, 31.

(The reason that Paul's readers not infrequently encounter difficulty in understanding his epistles is that they read them as books instead of as letters.  Hence, all who would understand them now, will keep in view the fact that he wrote them to groups with whom he had previous acquaintance and correspondence, of whose troubles and queries he had previous knowledge.  It was in that vein that he wrote to  them, so he knew what to say to them, and they well understood what he meant.  Consequently,

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       17

if we are to understand his letters, we must first become conversant with the conditions which called forth the letters.  To do this one must, by studying each letter, endeavor to find out what were the recipients' problems that he has tried to solve.  Otherwise there can only follow confusion as to what Paul is talking about.  Read them in this fashion, and you will discover that they are not so difficult to understand as they seem to be).

And let none deceive you with their gross self-interest -- their vain words, fair speeches, and crooked interpretations.  "By grace...through faith (Eph. 2:8), keep the Truth sanctified in your heart, and It will wash you in the blood of Christ, cleanse you and keep you clean, and clothe upon you the robes of His righteousness, -- His glorious character, -- "not having spot, or  wrinkle, or any such thing." Eph. 5:27.  "...if  ye do these things, ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." 2 Peter  1:10,11.

No one who abides in the love of Christ will ever turn a deaf ear to His Word, whether revealed through Himself, through His apostles, or through His prophets.  Such a one cannot possibly lose out, for should he, after being "born again," stumble into sin (not deliberately walk into it), then he has Jesus Christ, his advocate

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       18

in Heaven, to plead his case, atone for his sin and cleanse him from the guilt of it for ever (1 John 2:1; 1:9).

Accordingly, the salvation of the faithful today as in all ages, has been eternally secured by Christ's sacrifice of Himself for all, in payment of the penalty of death upon all for their transgression of the law of God.  This "so great salvation" did He secure, not by making the law valid for one age and void for another!  God forbid.  He secured it by the atoning blood of Christ for penitent sinners of all ages.  "By grace through faith" in the wondrous efficacy of that blood, every penitent, pardoned soul is eternally freed from the  condemnation of the broken law.  O amazing mercy that leaves no mortal a chance for losing out if he wants to win!

Also seriously consider what wicked discrimination, what destructive confusion, what dreadful injustice;...What kind of a god do most Christians serve!  Is it not the god of lawlessness for him to charge the God of love and justice to have demanded from His chosen people perfect obedience to His law and to have commanded the Gentiles entire disobedience to it!

The God of law and order in heaven and earth counsels us to "remember the Sabbath day, to keep It holy" (Ex. 20:8) and also to

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       19

"remember the Law" which He "commanded unto [Moses] in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments" -- (Mal. 4:4), the law of the ten commandments (Ex. 20:1-17).  (For the interpretation of it see chapters 21 to 23.)  Inspiration also declares that "by the law is the knowledge of sin" (Rom. 3:20); that "sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4); that "the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23).

If there is no law, then there is no sin, and there should be no death, and therefore no need for either a Bible or a Saviour.

Remember, too, that when the rich young ruler asked what he must do to have eternal life, Jesus' answer was: "Keep the commandments."   And His answer today is the same. (See Rev. 22:14)   When the ruler inquired which commandments he should keep, the Lord plainly told him: "Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Matt. 19:18, 19.

Here you see that the moral "law" and the "commandment" are synonymous.  "Think not," He declared, "that I am come to destroy [or to put away] the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill [the prophecies concerning Me and My work].  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       20

pass [and they still stand], one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.  Whosoever therefore shall break one  of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven....Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the Judgment: but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and  whosoever shall say to his brother Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire."  Matt. 5:17-19, 21, 22.

"For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make, shall remain before Me saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.  And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, saith the Lord." Isa. 66:22, 23.

The prophets (the Old Testament), including Jesus (the New Testament), positively magnify and perpetuate the ten-commandment law, rather than do away with it.  The Sabbath is to be kept, they declare, even in the New  Earth.

The whole "law is holy, and the commandment

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       21

holy, and just, and good" (Rom. 7:12).  David is in rapt Inspiration, too, declares, "Thy law is the Truth...all Thy commandments are Truth." Ps. 119:142, 151.  And Paul concludes: "We know that the law is spiritual...."  Rom. 7:14.  Hence James' all-comprehensive  conclusion: "whosoever shall keep the whole law,  and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.... Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."  James 2:10, 19.  The unrepentant law breakers, be they devils or humans, are lost forever.  "He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His  commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in  him." 1 John 2:4.

"Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie." Rev. 22:14, 15.

When the Lord was asked: "Master, which is the great commandment in the law?  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matt. 22:36-40.

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       22

Let us note carefully that the commandments were written by God Himself on two tables of stone.  The first one contained the first four commandments -- those which demand love to God -- and the second table contained the last six commandments -- those which demand love to our fellow men.  These two tables with their ten precepts -- four on the one and six on the other, the Lord summarizes them in two commandments and declares that they are the great commandments.  All of the ten commandments, therefore, are great, there is no distinction between one and the other.  So it is that on these commandments hang the law and the prophets -- the whole Bible -- that if these commandments fail then the whole Bible fails, that since the Bible cannot fail neither can the commandments fail, but he who does not repent for having broken them, and does not stop breaking them, will certainly fall to the bottom of the pit.

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.  For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." Eccles. 12:13, 14.

This is what the Bible teaches concerning the ten-commandment law, of which the Sabbath is a part, and this is what a Christian must believe, do, and teach if he expects to

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       23

have a place in the Kingdom of God.

And now as the Truth on the law, particularly on the Sabbath, is ablaze like the burning bush on Horeb, and as its penetrating light exposes the subtle heresies that are trying everyone's faith to the limit, the voice of Inspiration admonishingly and challengingly asks: "...How long halt ye between two opinions?  if the Lord be God, follow Him: but if Baal, then follow him...." 1 Kings 18:21.

How did Sunday, the first day of the week instead of Saturday, the seventh day, come to be observed as the Sabbath?  For your answer, read history, article Sunday.

The fact that every prominent heresy ever taught came through men who were held in high esteem and respect as ministers of God, should in itself be the greatest of eye-openers.  Tragic truth that it is, it solemnly adjures us never to lose out of reckoning the grim reality that no mortal on earth can afford to base his faith on another's conviction or reputation, but solely upon his own personal and unbiased examination of purported Truth.  Such a one will ever trust for guidance only the Spirit of God Who "searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God" (1 Cor. 2:10).  He is the only one Who leads every God-trusting individual into all Truth (John 14:26; 16:13).  There is no other safe course, no, none other that gives that

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       24

"peace....which passeth all understanding...."  Phil. 4:7.

Why are ministers led to devise heresies? -- Because the Enemy of souls knows that the laity, with but few exceptions, depend on the ministers and accept their opinions of freshly revealed truths, instead of trusting implicitly in the Spirit of God to guide them into all Truth through a personal examination of purported revelations.  Moreover, never since the dawn of sacred history, has Truth found Itself born in halls of learning or in the minds of the so-called great and wise, but only when and where "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Pet. 1:21.  And what is more, what few so-called great ever have come to study unpopular Truth, have been among the very last to embrace It, although among the very first to fight against it and to keep their flocks from It.  Hence to remember and to guard vigilantly against this dominant deadly peril is a prime  requisite to following Christ and to receiving the "so great salvation" (Heb. 2:3) which He  hath wrought for us "by the sacrifice of  Himself" (Heb. 9:26), to satisfy the demands of the broken law (Rom. 8:3, 4; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24).

The condemnation which Christ, "The True Witness," last pronounces is against "the angel  [the ministry] of the church of the Laodiceans," not against the church itself, and

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       25

not against the laity. (See Revelation  3:14-18).

Moreover since The True Witness Himself openly declares that they are the ones who feel in need of nothing more, that they are the lukewarm (satisfied and contented in their delusion) and determined to stay poor and blind, thus to be spued out, then what hope is there that they will ever arouse the laity to see and to accept freshly revealed Truth with which to heal the Laodicean malady?  None whatever -- no, no more than there was hope for the Jewish laity ever to be enlightened by their priests and rabbis.  Hence the inevitability  of their trying to confuse God's message and to bar it from reaching their flocks. But Jesus' assures: "I am the good shepherd and know My sheep, and am known of Mine. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and  they follow Me: and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.  My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand." John 10:14, 27-29.  "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good  pleasure to give you the Kingdom." Luke 12:32.

To know which day God blessed, hallowed and set aside for mankind to keep is indeed commendable, but this knowledge alone is insufficient.  To know how to keep It holy, and to really keep It, is of far greater importance.  We

Symbolic Code, Vol. 13, Nos. 11, 12                       26

should, therefore, not neglect to look into it.

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep It holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in It thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath lay, and hallowed It." Ex. 20:8-11.

The word "remember" would not have been included if men were not apt to forget the Sabbath,  We are, says Inspiration, to keep holy not a Sabbath, but "the Sabbath."  We are to keep It holy because It alone God blessed and hallowed.  Now follow the examples of how to keep It holy:

"And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.  And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye w.l. seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.  And they laid it

up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.  And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a Sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field.  Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, in It there shall be none.  And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.  And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws?  See, for that the Lord hath given you the Sabbath, therefore He giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.  So the people rested on the seventh day." Ex. 16:22-30.

"And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the Lord hath commanded, that ye should do them.  Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the Lord: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.  Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations  upon the Sabbath day." Ex. 35:1-3.

Here, God's unfailing care over His people is demonstrated in type.  If there is no food (manna) to be found tomorrow, He sends us a double portion today, and its preservation

He makes sure.  So it is that by keeping His Sabbath holy we cannot possibly be losing.  He Himself in one way or another makes up the deficiency.  The type therefore proves that the search for manna (livelihood) on the Sabbath is a wasted and fruitless sport, and that cooking and food preparations should be made on the day before the Sabbath.  That needless work, such as building fire for the sole purpose of cooking on the Sabbath day, is prohibited.  The type, moreover, shows that the penalty for deliberate Sabbath breaking is death -- the second or eternal death.  Sabbath though, should be made pleasant and attractive for the children.  Something special will make them love to see the Sabbath hours come in.  Find out what would please them best that is within the bounds of Sabbath keeping.

Since if one is passing through a field, a garden or an orchard on the Sabbath day while hungry he may pick food and eat (Matt. 12:1) but not carrying any of it out of the field (Deut. 23:24, 25), and since the sick, human or animal must be watched and cared for on the Sabbath (Luke 14:5), it is understandable that if one is living in the frigid zones, where and when it is cold, he can have artificial means for keeping warm.  Building fire for such cause is therefore permissible.  Then too, we should remember in our Sabbath keeping program that "the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath." Mark 2:27; that Sabbath

keeping brings blessing not a curse, tyranny or poverty; that It brings joy over what God has enabled us to accomplish during the six  working days.  It enables us to rejoice and to look back upon our deeds and wholeheartedly and honestly be able to say "My work and deeds are faultless, they are very good."  God reviewed His creative work on the Sabbath day and rejoiced over it.  Then too, six days  of honest work should bring all our work up to date rather than leaving part of it for another day -- no true Sabbath keeper is a time killer either.

"If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:  then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the  heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." Isa. 58:13, 14.

Thus is the Divine surety that God's Truth-seeking people will not be fooled.  They will "let God be true, but every man a liar." Rom. 3:4.  They will let no man take the place of the Spirit of God, Who leads into all Truth, for they know that only by using their own God-given reason and personal saving experience will they find their way into the kingdom of

God.  In short, they know that "though Noah, Daniel, and Job" be in the land, they shall deliver but their own souls...." Ezek. 14:20.

"If the law could be changed, man might have been saved without the sacrifice of Christ; but the fact that it was necessary for Christ to give His life for the fallen race, proves that the law of God will not release the sinner from its claims upon him.  It is demonstrated  that the wages of sin is death.  When Christ died, the destruction of Satan was made certain.  But if  the law was abolished at the cross, as many claim,  then the agony and death of God's dear Son were  endured only to give to Satan just what he asked; then the prince of evil triumphed, his charges against the divine government were sustained.  The very fact that Christ bore the penalty of Man's transgression, is a mighty argument to all created intelligences, that the law is changeless; that God is righteous, merciful, and self-denying; and that infinite justice and mercy unite in the administration of His government." -- Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 70.
